State health officials in Texas say asking women a few questions can dramatically decrease their alcohol use during pregnancy.

A federal judge today found that the Texas “sonogram law” violates the First Amendment and blocked enforcement of important provisions of the statute. This law would have forced women seeking to terminate a pregnancy to undergo a medically unnecessary and intrusive transvaginal sonogram.
Without a judge’s intervention, Texas women will be forced to undergo mandatory ultrasounds before abortions starting Thursday.

The legislature removes defunding language that could hurt the medical groups they don’t want punished for performing abortions, but makes sure to keep Planned Parenthood restrictions in their bills.
