Sen. Patty Murray has introduced a bill that would both educate the public about emergency contraception and make it available to more rape survivors who go to the emergency room.
Presented as extensions of the Violence Against Women Act at the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on Wednesday were Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Victims Act and Sen. Richard Blumenthal’s Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act.
The Campus Accountability and Safety Act would designate confidential advisors to counsel sexual assault survivors on their options, stiffen penalties for universities that don’t do enough to address sexual assault, and require colleges to survey their students about their experiences.
While witnesses on both sides of the issue claimed to be in favor of protecting women’s health, anti-choice witnesses relied heavily on debunked science and distorted interpretations of the bill to make many of their claims.
During Sen. Graham’s ultimately failed attempt to force a vote on a 20-week abortion ban on Tuesday, he made comments indicating he is aware that 20-week bans are a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, and therefore a direct threat to legal abortion access in the United States.
