Progressives Must Not Dismiss the Oregon Militia Standoff as Irrelevant

These anti-government groups, quite a few of whom have deep ideological ties with white supremacist organizations and individuals, should alarm the left. Their philosophies often have foundations of racism, colonialism, and restriction of reproductive rights—and their numbers are growing.

Anti-Islam Rhetoric Will Do Nothing to Stop Terror

Each time an attack occurs, public figures seem willing to conflate terrorists and Muslims as interchangeable subjects. It draws divides of “us” versus “them” more blatantly. It reiterates that our people’s lives are worth less than non-Muslims.

How a Tradition That Says ‘Thou Shalt Not Lie’ Justifies Deception

From abortion clinics being required to give medically inaccurate information to poorly conducted studies on the efficacy of same-sex parenting, conservative evangelicals seem to have no problem bending the truth to push a right-wing, anti-gay, anti-woman agenda.

Pro-Choice for Christ

In a political landscape that seems destined to pit bibles against birth control for as long as the culture wars shall persist, the Religious Institute is just one of numerous organizations advocating for contraceptive access, abortion rights, and LGBTQ rights motivated by—and not despite—Christian faith.

Do We Live in a Christian America? Not Quite

For many conservative American politicians and members of the fundamentalist right wing, the idea that our nation is God’s “chosen land" is a frequently invoked trope. But a new book by Steven K. Green, Inventing a Christian America: The Myth of the Religious Founding, suggests this is a misreading of history.

Respecting Beatriz’s Freedom of Conscience

Let us remember what Jesus Christ said in the Gospels: the law was made for human beings; human beings are not made for the law. The law which penalizes abortion is cruel and inhuman, as it condemns many women to death.

At a time when religious extremists around the globe have repackaged their efforts to undermine reproductive rights within a call for greater protection for religious liberty, will the Salvadoran Supreme Court of Justice respect Beatriz’s freedom of conscience?

Our Church: Home to Planned Parenthood for Forty Years – and Still Fighting

Inside the First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg, NY, during Advent/Christmas.

It is hard to believe that the U. S House of Representatives actually voted to cut off Planned Parenthood altogether. These political attacks get plenty of attention. Meanwhile, in contrast, the Presbyterian Church I am blessed to serve wants to be sure that a woman’s health center, like Planned Parenthood, has a home.

Biblical Abortion: A Christian’s View

Judah and Tamar, from 1728 Figures de la Bible, Gerard Hoet (1648-1733) and others

It’s commonly claimed that it’s a Christian duty to abolish abortion, in accordance with a Biblical teaching that abortion is a sin. However, one Christian’s reading of the Bible poses challenges to that assumption, instead turning up some eye-opening Biblical views on terminating a pregnancy.
