House Votes to Bar D.C. From Using Its Own Funds to Assist Low-Income Women in Need of Abortion Care
The “small government” Republican and Tea Party majority in the House are seeking to put their big, intrusive footprint on the necks of District residents by inserting an amendment to the 2012 Financial Services Appropriations bill extending that ban for another year.
This morning, the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies passed the Fiscal Year 2010 appropriations bill and in doing so eliminated traditional sources of abstinence-only-until marriage programs and a ban on syringe exchange for HIV prevention among users of intravenous drugs. The full scope of changes is still, however, being analyzed.
Over 175 state and national organizations are pressing the Obama White House and Congress to replace silo-ed sex ed programs with truly comprehensive efforts to reduce teen pregnancy and infection.
