Rep. Jan Schakowsky
Rep. Schakowsky represents the 9th congressional district of Illinois and has served in the House of Representatives since 1999. She has long championed and worked tirelessly to on legislation to expand protections for immigrant victims of domestic violence. She recently introduced the Violence Against Immigrant Women Act which would build upon the immigration provisions in the current VAWA to ensure that immigrant victims have the legal resources necessary to escape abuse.

Unfortunately, House Republicans are advancing H.R. 4970, which would undermine the core principles of VAWA. H.R. 4970 is not VAWA – it goes against the intent of VAWA which is to protect victims – if anything, this bill will only make it worse for victims.
