Kate Stratten joined IntraHealth International in 2008. She is the senior program manager for the organization’s work in Ethiopia, which focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support, including preventing mother-to-child HIV infections as well as obstetric fistula. Ms. Stratten has over 15 years of leadership and technical program management experience in public health projects in Africa. Her expertise is in HIV/AIDS, family planning, gender-based violence, maternal and child health, and health systems strengthening. Prior to moving to the United States in 2001 to work for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP), Ms. Stratten lived and worked in South Africa as a consultant and program manger on numerous national HIV/AIDS, gender and reproductive health initiatives. During her years at CCP, Ms. Stratten gained considerable international experience managing HIV/AIDS programs in Ethiopia, Namibia, Zambia, and West Africa. She played a significant role establishing the Ethiopian AIDS Resource Center and AIDS Hotline in 2001, which to this day is a key source of information on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted infections for Ethiopians and medical personnel. As the HIV/AIDS Technical Advisor for CCP in Namibia, Ms. Stratten supported a large community-based prevention initiative for two years, after which she returned to the United States to manage CCP’s programs in Nigeria.
