Suggesting that abortion be “safe, legal, and rare,” and crowing that “no one likes abortion,” accomplishes nothing for women’s rights. Rather than trying to cozy up to the forced-birth camp, women who value their freedom should be proud to say that they like abortion, the one final, definitive instrument that secures our bodily autonomy.

There are myriad important reasons to have the pro-choice abortion conversation – and to keep having it as your pre-schoolers become big kids, tweens, and then teenagers who will soon be facing reproductive decisions of their own.

As a young twenty-something, I welcomed two very wanted, well-loved babies into the world. Once things began to deteriorate between their father and I, I knew without a doubt that any future pregnancy we faced would be terminated. In October 2010, I had an abortion.
