Kansas County Rejects State Funds for Contraception After Commissioner Conflates IUDs With Abortifacients

A county in Kansas has rejected a state grant for contraceptives, after a county commissioner opposed the grant because he incorrectly considers intrauterine devices (IUDs) to be an abortifacient.

Commissioners voted 3 to 0 to reject the grant.

“I am not going to stand before my God, and he is going to point his finger and say, ‘You aborted those kids,” Saline County Commissioner John Price said during a meeting Tuesday, according to an Associated Press report. “I think it is murder to take this [grant money]. To me it is murder, and I am not standing for it.”

IUDs and other forms of contraception prevent pregnancy from occurring, and therefore cannot cause an abortion, as the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists explains here.

Price’s remarks comes just a few months after another Saline county commissioner, Jim Gile, was highly criticized for using a racial slur.

The state grant, worth $6,064 from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, would have provided long-acting, reversible contraceptives for county health department clients. Jeanette Peroli, a nurse practitioner with the Saline County Health Department, told the Salina Journal that there is a list of patients who are interested in receiving IUDs from the department.

Peroli said she had provided Price with information on why IUDs are not abortifacients but that Price was unconvinced.

“If they were to convince me, these doctors, I would feel different,” Price said. “I studied this real hard. I just feel it’s wrong. You can’t change my thoughts.”

What a collection of idiots. I can’t imagine why anyone would live there.

    • Mindy McIndy

The only thing good about Kansas is the prog-rock band named after it.

      • http://batman-news.com Mummel18000

If that is good, then the rest must be truly awful. And as a european watching US from the outside I just wonder: why don’t you split the country in two – keep the coasts to people like those posting here, and leave the midwest to those foetus fetishists?

        • http://degeneratematterstudios.com T. E. Hieatt

Not all of us are bumpkins in the Midwest. The problem is that the elected people right now are the Tea Party Bible-Belt types backed by wealthy megachurches, voted in by Bible Belt people scared of progress and change. So they’ve been wasting all of their in-office time trying to “correct” social liberalism, instead of doing things that matter, like improving the economy, jobs, and infrastructure. Instead of fixing bridges that will collapse and kill people, they’ve wasted time, money, and resources regressing reproductive rights, shaming women, and destroying science. Stay classy, evangelical America.

          • http://batman-news.com Mummel18000

I know, but this is the impression you get when you see USA from the outside. I have been debating with some of those at Live Action News, and those people are just too much. I said that I do not love abortions, but sometimes it is the necessary choice, and that I have two children I love deeply, and got this one back: “Whose body parts you would have been overjoyed to see in a collection vessel had your wife chosen to kill them in her womb”… nice people aren’t they?

          • purrtriarchy

Those who don’t have an argument must resort to emotion. Oh, and they have to make pro choicers sound like monsters in order to justify their misogyny.

          • Shan

I hear ya. Mary Pilcher-Cook is one of the most egregious time-wasters in the Kansas legislature.

            http://crooksandliars.com/2014/03/kansas-lawmaker-wants-women-report-any

“…The lawmaker has also attempted to outlaw surrogacy, weaken the state’s sex ed requirements, levy a sales tax on abortion procedures, and prevent the state’s abortion restrictions from including exceptions for rape and incest. She once pushed for a mandatory ultrasound bill on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by performing live sonograms on the Senate floor. It’s perhaps unsurprising that she’s turning her attention to a first-of-its-kind state law to regulate women’s miscarriages.”

  • jruwaldt

Of course, in their minds this is abortion, because it prevents the implantation of a zygote. The do, after all, equate fertilization with conception. However, I’m sure the whole reason they try to push conception back as far as possible is simply to increase the chances of punishing women for having sex.

  • Sitara Singley

Pregnancy begins at implantation. IUDs prevent implantation. Therefore, they are contraceptives, not abortifacients. To be an abortifacient, something has to act after implantation, not before.

    • lady_black

Actually, the hormonal IUDs act hormonally to inhibit ovulation, and the copper IUDs are a sort of natural spermicide. Even if sometimes implantation is prevented (and from what I know, IUDs don’t work that way) mission accomplished. Either way, you aren’t pregnant.

      • Sitara Singley

Fair enough. Im new to the science of being prochoice. Ive only been a choicer for two years, so Im spring cleaning my mind.

        • Arekushieru

Hey, Sitara, glad to see that you might be a regular on this site, now. I don’t remember if we’re Facebook friends, but you should recognize my name. Carla Clark?

          • Sitara Singley

I cant find you on my list. Ya wanna add me? :)

          • Arekushieru

            Sure!

          • Sitara Singley

            Awesome. :)

      • Shan

And the thing that the zygote-worshippers forget is this: women using any type of contraception that inhibits ovulation as its primary MOA experience the loss of fertilized eggs far less frequently than women who don’t use it.

        • lady_black

Yes, it does mean that. The anti-choice people don’t think about that. Of course the woman who doesn’t ovulate will not lose any fertilized ovum. Not that I care…

          • Shan

Yes. The continual focus on the moment-by-moment goings on in every woman’s uterus is beyond creepy.

  • purrtriarchy

Just more proof that anti choicers are not interested in preventing unwanted pregnancy.

    • Pinkladyapple

Nope they aren’t. They don’t actually care about reducing the rate of unplanned pregnancies, they want women to stop having non marital non procreational sex. Its so obvious to see through their thinly veiled smoke screen of “sanctity of precious human life” and more about puritanical ideas of female sexuality.

      • lady_black

That is their misfortune. They can either get glad about it, or we’ll just roll right over them. Either way, it’s their choice.

  • ChrisFunguy79

Why do misogynist politicians think that women are incapable of paying for something themselves without the help of the gov’t.

    Stay out of my uterus.

    • Arekushieru

Um, why does misogynist ChrisFunguy think that women should be forced to pay for contraception out of their own pocket (which is not stating that women aren’t paying for their own contraception already through employer plans or purchasing their own insurance plans), while Viagra should be covered? See, THAT is misogyny. What YOU are talking about is misogyny. What the politicians to whom you refer in your comment support is NOT misogyny, but EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN. Jackass.

      • Jennifer Starr

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He thinks that tampons are inserted in the uterus, remember–he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.

        • fiona64

Yes, and that women can just insert their own IUDs. He’s an idiot, homeschooled teen.

    • lady_black

The government is not paying for women’s contraception. Their insurance companies are paying out of their premiums, which they either EARN or pay out of pocket for.

      • Shan

This was at the Saline County Health Department, where people get free and reduced healthcare. But nobody seems to be complaining about their other programs, like WIC, home healthcare, and vaccinations. It’s only women’s contraception that causes them to lose their minds. But just wait: when the FDA approves the first prescription contraceptives for men, the lines will be out the door and around the block like it was the newest iPhone.

        • lady_black

Well, when it comes to Medicaid, they always paid for contraceptives, including sterilization. I consider that an investment. It ultimately saves money down the road.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Yeah, less of those nasty minorities around. Right?

You and Margaret Sanger….two peas in the same pod.

          • lady_black

What are you barking about, Chris? I had my tubes tied while on Medicaid. Do I look like a minority to you? Nobody is ever going to get out of poverty while breeding.

          • ChrisFunguy79

So instead of paying the bill yourself, you had the gov’t do it. Superb.

While, you could have just refrained from sex, but we get it, your sex drive is insatiable and cannot be stopped…by anything.

          • lady_black

That’s right. I was newly divorced, with three kids and a deadbeat ex. I had no insurance, but what I did have was a scholarship for nursing school. I went for it. That was in the mid 1980s and in all that time I have never been on welfare again. Never had to refrain from sex, either. Kind of seems worth it to me, looking back. I went from single mom with no future to homeowner and taxpayer, and never looked back. Some people might think that was a GOOD thing, but obviously, you don’t think, period. So what else could I expect?

          • ChrisFunguy79

Oh, it was probably a great thing for you. I don’t doubt that.

So when are you going to send Uncle Sam back the money you took from the taxpayers to pay for your BTL?

          • lady_black

See, that’s the thing. You pay “Uncle Sam” back by moving from dependency to self-sufficiency, and paying taxes for the next 30 or 45 years. You don’t get billed for it. It’s like a grant, for people who have no other options. On the bright side, they got the deadbeat to pay up and they got all that money, so it all comes out in the wash.

          • ChrisFunguy79

You still owe a debt to Uncle Sam. A debt that you had the taxpayers pay for you. Look, it’s great you moved on, but your repayment isn’t the fact that you succeeded where others have not. It would be an actual repayment. You should consider cutting a check to the US gov’t for about $10K. I think it would take away some of that guilt you have for accepting tax payer money for your own personal needs.

And, BTW, good job on making the deadbeat pay up. That makes me sick that certain men think they can just procreate en mass without consequences.

          • lady_black

I owe nothing. That isn’t how it works. I never took any taxpayer money for my own personal needs, and I don’t feel guilty in the least. Number one, I didn’t collect ten thousand dollars the entire time. The taxpayers paid me about $150 a month for two years. That’s not ten thousand dollars when I went to school. I had a scholarship, remember? Number two, they got the child support. That’s a very cheap investment. It’s called an entitlement for a reason. It’s because you’re entitled to the help when you have no other options. That means you don’t pay it back. If I had been able to get the state to do their job and collect the support without being on welfare, I wouldn’t have needed the welfare. Get it?? Back then, going on welfare was the only way to make sure the state got off their ass and collected it. Another of those “Catch 22″ situations. Unless the state was paying out, they just didn’t give a damn. These are well-known facts if you’ve been paying attention.

          • ChrisFunguy79

How much do you think that BTL cost?

Pay it back. Then you’ll feel better for making other people pay for your personal sex life.

          • lady_black

Nope. I don’t want to pay it back, just like I don’t pay back any other insurance coverage I’ve had. The research I’ve done indicates tubal ligation through Planned Parenthood ranges from $850 to $1200 depending upon income. That’s today’s figures. I don’t have any resources to say what the cost was in 1985, but you can bet it was considerably lower, because everything else cost considerably less in 1985. Mine would be on the lower end of cost since I had a regional block instead of general anesthesia. So let’s be very conservative and say the tubal ligation cost $400-$600 back in 1985. A comparable price to a year’s supply of birth control pills, which I’m sure are also covered by Title X and Medicaid. I don’t think this is a fight you really want to have. What do you think it would have cost Medicaid for another complicated pregnancy? Plus, my doctor said another pregnancy could kill me, so there really was no “choice” about it. It was necessary medical care for me.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Or you could, like …stop having sex if you knew it was going to kill you….

But you didn’t …and you expected the US gov’t to pay for your time.

          • purrtriarchy

            You’re boring. And stupid.

Please. For the love of God, get some new material.

          • ChrisFunguy79

            You’re right.

I’m sorry for making fun of people who thought the gov’t was their savior.

            My bad.

          • ChrisFunguy79

            sorry

          • Jennifer Starr

I’m flagging everything it posts because it’s getting old fast, and really, really stupid. Not to mention the fact that it’s completely off-topic.

          • ChrisFunguy79

flagged for threatening flagging because you’re too thin-skinned to read some comments

          • Jennifer Starr

Oh, no, it’s never been a threat.

          • Jennifer Starr

Oh I read them. And I can just about predict exactly what they’re going to say. The same off-topic rubbish and tired talking points.

          • Arekushieru

And someone being thin-skinned is NOT an excuse to flag someone.

          • Jennifer Starr

I don’t think it has new material. Just the same old same old.

          • fiona64

5×5 would have to have a mind before he could blow someone else’s. He’s just mad because he couldn’t get a date to the homeschool prom.

            Again.

          • Arekushieru

Which is pretty DAMNED racist of you. Expect people living in poverty (who generally tend to be minorities) to refrain from something every one else enjoys? Racism. Margaret Sanger opposed that. So, NOT the racist. You are.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Thank you sir for your comment.

          • Arekushieru

Like purr said, get some new material. Stop proving what a bigot you are by appearance-shaming others. Jackass.

          • lady_black

I didn’t want to stop having sex. You can stop having sex if you want.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Great. Then pay for your own tubal ligation.

          • lady_black

            NO.

          • ChrisFunguy79

I get it. You want to do something, but you expect others to pay for it

            Superb.

          • Shan

Why don’t you write a letter to all the McCEO’s and WalMart heirs out there who’ve garnered billions in tax breaks from the government and who continue to pay their employees such crappy wages that they actually have HR personnel helping them apply for public assistance? Address them like you’ve addressed LB here. I’d love to see that letter published online.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Lady Black admitted to having kids that she couldn’t afford. But I guess you think that’s OK.

          • Shan

Are you responding to someone else’s question? Because that’s got nothing to do with what I asked.

          • lady_black

I admitted to no such thing. I said I had a lot of difficulty collecting child support. That’s not the same thing as not being able to afford kids. I do not have to be able to support them myself, because I did not MAKE them by myself. I don’t give a fat rat’s ass if you think that’s “OK” or not. I didn’t ask your permission.

          • ChrisFunguy79

If you were on Medicaid, you had kids that you couldn’t afford. Stop trying to re-write history.

          • lady_black

No YOU are re-writing history by claiming that it was my responsibility and not my ex-husband’s to provide financial support. He laid down too. THAT, sir, is the definition of misogyny.

          • ChrisFunguy79

If you’re not responsible enough to have a stable marriage before you have kids, then it is your responsibility to financial support your kids.

            Not the governments.

          • lady_black

            Except that isn’t true.

          • ChrisFunguy79

You think it is the gov’ts responsibility to pay for YOUR kids?

            Yikes.

          • lady_black

Actually, it’s the responsibility of the government to enforce laws. There are laws saying parents have to support their children. Not “parent” because the other parent doesn’t feel like doing it any more. There are consequences to failing to enforce those laws. Yikes. More people will be on assistance, because they aren’t going to just die quietly.

          • ChrisFunguy79

So it’s the taxpayers burden because your dysfunctional marriage caused you to not be able to financially care for your kids.

Thanks for the increase in taxes.

          • lady_black

Too bad, so sad. I don’t care. Now my taxes are doing the same thing for someone else. I don’t have to put up with anyone’s abusive bullshit. Including from you.

          • ChrisFunguy79

            Reality is abusive to you?

          • lady_black

You and reality don’t belong in the same sentence.

          • ChrisFunguy79

            good comeback

          • Arekushieru

            Yeah, it was, wasn’t it?

          • Arekushieru

She pays the increase in taxes to support others, what does that tell you? It’s not reality that’s abusive, but YOU, obviously, dipshit? After all, if reality was abusive, she would forego paying the taxes for others, like you. Oops.

Also, according to you, only fetuses have a right to life. Once they’re born, they can all rot and die, eh?

          • Shan

“You think it is the gov’ts responsibility to pay for YOUR kids?”

From what it sounds like, she was paying her portion toward their support and the “gov’t” was paying what their deadbeat dad wouldn’t. I notice how you don’t reserve any criticism for HIM at all.

Oh, and how’s that letter to all the McCEO’s coming? Need any tips?

          • Arekushieru

Responsible enough to have a stable marriage? Where do you GET this BS? No blame for an unstable marriage placed on the male spouse? No consideration that maybe an unstable marriage is NEITHER’S responsibility? You ARE an ignorant, misogynistic ass.

          • Arekushieru

If she was married and on Medicaid, you expected her to refrain from having sex just because she was on it? We all know who the racist and bigot, here, is and it’s NOT Lady-Black or Margaret Sanger.

But, considering that Lady-Black never even implicitly STATED that she was on Medicaid while she was married, and, in fact, at one point, EXPLICITLY stated that she had no insurance, just a nursing scholarship that she went for and that she had the tubal LIGATION while on Medicaid, requires that YOU be doing some SERIOUS revision of history. Oops.

          • ChrisFunguy79

            Sir, this doesn’t concern you.

          • fiona64

          • Jennifer Starr

And now you’re going to play victim and say something like “I tried to be civil”, which as we all know is a bald-faced lie. Face it, Chris. Your behavior gets you kicked off every board and it’s always your own fault.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Oh, now your victim blaming. Goodie for you.

          • Jennifer Starr

And you’re a victim of what, exactly? Oh, that’s right. Nothing.

          • ChrisFunguy79

How about harassment by posters like you?

          • Jennifer Starr

Give me a break. You come here expressly to troll because you’re butthurt about being banned again and again and again for your own atrocious behavior. Want me to play a teeny-tiny violin for you?

          • ChrisFunguy79

I was banned from having a different opinion than you?

          • Jennifer Starr

You didn’t come here to debate or express an opinion. And no, you’ve never been civil. You came here only to troll with the same old predictable rubbish, to derail threads with off-topic nonsense and personally attack other posters. That’s all you’ve ever done. And that’s what has gotten you kicked off of practically every board you’ve ever posted on. You’ve gotten exactly what you come here for.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Well it’s a good thing you haven’t personally attacked me

            Oh wait.

          • Jennifer Starr

Nope, I’m afraid the tiny violin’s all played out on that one. You can keep on whining, though–it’s about as boring and predictable as everything else you do and say.

          • fiona64

No, you get banned *repeatedly* for violating TOS *repeatedly.* And whose fault would that be? Hmm …

          • ChrisFunguy79

Is part is the TOS agreeing with abortion? ha

          • Jennifer Starr

You notice Rita, Canberra? We disagree with her views but she’s not getting flagged.

Correct. We heartily disagree with her but she remains within the boundaries of reasonable debate.

Unless you’re cool with being a hypocrite?

          • Jennifer Starr

She hasn’t violated anything. I know you won’t really understand that, but that’s not my problem. It is what it is.

Sorry, but while I don’t agree with intelligence-shaming, I also believe you only get what you give. And that’s a specific you, btw.

          • ChrisFunguy79

You work at a grocery store for fucks sake….

          • Arekushieru

Uh, what? What does THAT have to do with anything? Besides, someone who obviously has no medical background whatsoever, and has NO stake in pregnancy is more applicable to where the bar is being set (by THEMSELVES) than someone who is a woman and works as a cashier where they meet PLENTY of people and also learns to give as good as they get, under the circumstances, as opposed to someone who apparently only lives out of his mother’s basement and doesn’t do much else, considering all that they’ve typed, here, no? Seriously, did you think you were being clever or witty when you continuously called me ‘Sir’, when I repeatedly asked you not to do that? Somehow, I think you knew you were being insulting, therefore you are getting what you GAVE. Kthx.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Don’t cry sir. I’m sure someday you’ll get a better job and find a husband. Keep your chins up.

          • Jennifer Starr

Again, you’re going to get exactly what you give.

          • purrtriarchy

Tell us what you have contributed to society, cupcake.

          • ChrisFunguy79

I got promoted and I work in the deli section. So ha. There.

          • Arekushieru

Too bad the deli section doesn’t deal with customers like cashiers do. freak. It’s just where you deserve to be. FAR away from decent people. They might get ill from getting too close to you. And that has nothing to do with your appearance (which you CONTINUE to hide all the while shaming others for theirs, just because they don’t want to be accused of being cowards by OTHER antis. Although, it’s typical for antis to create a catch-22 and not assume the responsibility for it that they want OTHERS to assume like the freaks they are) OR your intelligence. Hmm, haven’t shamed you for any of that, EVER, yet you continue to do so with me and wonder why you’re getting what you give? Oi, the ignorance of antis makes my head hurt.

          • ChrisFunguy79

            Sir, don’t call people freaks.

          • Jennifer Starr

Precisely. In fact, about 99% of the anti-choice people who post here don’t get flagged by me. I enjoy a decent debate, which is something this troll never provides.

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

Same here. I rarely flag folks. But this twat has truly annoyed me and it gets off on annoying others.

          • Jennifer Starr

I also didn’t flag Mr. Blatty–though I strongly disagreed with his views. I find it kind of amusing that he adopts the name of one of his characters to comment on our message boards.

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

I did not get that. Who was it? Let me guess = Harley Rummel?

          • Jennifer Starr

Yes : ) From the comic story/movie that he wrote called “Promise Her Anything”. Warren Beatty played Harley Rummel and my sister is a Beatty fan. it’s a pretty good movie, actually.

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

We beat Blatty’s dumb butt. That makes me really happy.

          • fiona64

Yeah, he wasn’t even subtle, was he?

          • fiona64

Don’t try to be clever, Chris. You completely lack the ability.

          • fiona64

            Yes, you’re such a victim. @@

          • fiona64

Pot, sweetie, I’d watch out with all of those names you’re calling the kettle.

Your sole purpose is to harass. Now, why don’t you go color while the grown-ups wait for your pretentious, misogynistic ass to be banned for a fourth time?

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

You have a perfect right to abstain from sex. Personally, in your case I doubt that is a choice. I would not do you with somebody else’s dick. Eww. You cannot and should not make rules for me. Capisce? And I do not think you understand the meaning of the word “normal.”

          • Wendy Banks

            lol

          • ChrisFunguy79

            flagged for personal attacks

          • fiona64

He’s so cute, with his stupid little insistence that he, an unemployed teen living in his mommy’s basement, is somehow a) a taxpayer, and b) paying for *anything.*

          • fiona64

Just because no one wants to fuck *you,* doesn’t mean that other people have to be celibate, loser-boy.

          • ChrisFunguy79

Just because you cannot control your urge to fuck doesn’t mean the taxpayers should fund you.

          • cjvg

Coverage for those procedures are NOT depended on race!
More over these procedures are only provided to people who are CHOOSING to have one As in these people want this procedure!

What about the word choice is just so d*mn hard for you to understand?

Denying people coverage for medical procedures because of their race is actually what is really racist!
Denying people the right to choose a medical procedure because of their race is actually racist
Giving people the option to make their own medical choices and providing finances so they can pay for them even if they do not have the financial resources themselves, regardless of their race is not racist

You are just a wannabe dictator in a not so good disguise aren’t you

          • Arekushieru

Too bad you think that someone who is anti-abortion is any more like someone like Lady-Black than they are like someone like you. You are simply anti-choice, after all. Margaret Sanger wanted to lift the poor and minorities out of poverty, YOU want to keep them there. Gee, you’re sounding more and more like your version of Margaret Sanger with every word that comes out of your mouth, jackass.

          • Shan

Did you accidentally post this to the wrong discussion forum?

          • Jennifer Starr

No, unfortunately he didn’t. It’s just what he does–derailing posts with pointless nonsense.

          • Shan

Yeah, I get a lot of windows going at the same time myself so I figured I’d give him the benefit of the doubt. ;-)

        • Pinkladyapple

Male bc would be awesome. I bet the GOP would have no qualms whatsoever with endorsing mens birth control options.

          • http://plumstchili.blogspot.com/ Plum Dumpling

And we will find out, when men have reliable birth control, just exactly how much the love children and women. Talk about world changing. It will be epic.

      • ChrisFunguy79

I think if you’ll read a little more carefully, you’ll see that I never wrote that the gov’t is paying for it.

However, the gov’t is helping them with legislation that forces insurance companies to cover certain things.

I know, I know. Reading is difficult and shit. Keep practicing.

        • lady_black

Good. I don’t have any issue with that. And it’s not a new idea, either. Laws have forced insurance companies to cover contraceptives to the same extent as any other prescription since 2001. Along the way, they found out it’s a good deal for them too. Now they want to cover contraceptives. Any more stupid assertions?

    • fiona64

Little teenaged boys living in their mommy’s basements don’t possess a uterus.

      • Ella Warnock

Probably got a pocket pussy, though.

  • Donnie McLeod

Another proof there is no balance point between right and left. The words right and left imply something that does not exist in reality. There is conservatism which depends on our fear based thinking process. It is where belief comes from. If you challenge a false perception of reality, a belief, the holder squeezes tighter. Liberalism is the good habit of parking our fear based thinking process. There is no centre between make belief and reality. There is no balance with fear on one side and reason on the other.

  • fiona64

So, because yet another anti-choice idiot male (it’s so easy to wave your big dumb paw and pronounce on something that will never affect you, Mr. Price …) doesn’t understand how *reality* works, underprivileged women will suffer.

  • Suba gunawardana

    LOL What an idiocracy!

    • Shan

      We call it Brownbackistan.
