Why I’m Proud To Be an LGBT Teen in Illinois

Emily Spangler is a 15-year-old high school student and one of RH Reality Check‘s youth voices.

Recently, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill permitting same-sex marriage. But I knew equality was coming the day I watched the Illinois House of Representatives vote 61 to 54 in support of the policy. I watched online as openly gay lawmakers, past and present, showed their support by their mere presence in the room. As a teen living in Illinois who is part of the LGBT community, this was not just about equality for me. It represented a giant leap forward.

My parents taught me to treat everyone with dignity and respect, no matter the circumstances. Skin color, gender, sexual orientation—these identities, I learned, should never be the basis for passing judgment on a person. As I got older, I realized that I, too, am part of a community that I was taught to not judge: the LGBT community. This community is often misunderstood, offered up as a joke, and deemed “sinful.” While I proudly came out and started to advocate for my own rights and for the rights of others, I also became an LGBT advocate because it’s a human rights issue. It’s about justice, and ensuring that all our citizens are valued, wanted, and accepted for their true identity.

Marriage equality is a critical piece of LGBT rights advocacy. For one thing, marriage is sacred for many people. It can be a consecration of a couple’s love. Many people of all sexual orientations dream of this important rite of passage. For certain individuals to be denied this unity is absurd. Love is love. No one has the right to deny people marriage because they themselves show ignorance to the way others were born or how others express love. Finally, in my state, the compassion, empathy, and appreciation that are shown between LGBT partners will be recognized as legal.

But let’s not stop there. We need to do more in Illinois and around the country in support of the LGBT community. As far as marriage equality goes, Illinois is now one of 17 states plus the District of Columbia that has it. So we still have more than half of the states in the country left to go.

Other issues still left to tackle include banning gay conversion therapy to ensure that young adults like me are not forced to undergo extreme treatment to be “cured” of our “disease.” My friends and I have already been in contact with an openly gay lawmaker about our desire to ban this supposed therapy, which is an expression of intolerance and can be scarring to those forced to undergo it.

We also must work across a range of areas to ensure equal rights for LGBT youth so that young adults are no longer threatened in their schools, communities, and homes simply because of the way they were born or who they love. One way to take action is to join forces with national groups and efforts, such as the Human Rights Campaign or the NOH8 Campaign. Even the act of sharing stickers and photographs from these campaigns sends a message to the community that both legislators and voters must stand up for the rights of LGBT people of all ages.

Even with all that’s left to accomplish, I have to say how proud I am to reside in the land of Lincoln. What a number of Illinois lawmakers did was courageous, and to them I say: Thank You. Thank you for recognizing love even though there are still many states that deem it invalid. Thank you for voting for your constituents and for the citizens of Illinois who belong to the LGBT community. Because of your compassion, we will be able to define our love as something sacred, something beautiful, and something legal.

As a Hoosier, I am ashamed of my neighbors to the west.

    • Jennifer Starr

What a nasty thing to say.

      • AveMaria02

That is your opinion. My opinion is that what I said is not nasty at all. It is the truth about how I feel. I am deeply ashamed of the fact that Illinois has passed a law allowing the abomination known as “gay marriage”.

        • RonPaul2012

Why do you hate gay people so much?

Hate the sin, love the sinner.

          You’re just full of hate.

        • Jennifer Starr

I think maybe you need to look inside yourself and find out why someone else’s sexual preference and marriage bothers you so much.

          • RonPaul2012

The other day over on TFA we had a dude who made around 10 posts talking about how disgusted he was with homosexuals and their perverted lifestyle.

In every post he made sure to go into graphic detail of how he found ‘dicks’ going into ‘butts’ (with more colorful language) to be repulsive.

          • Jennifer Starr

Yeah, I’d say that’s someone who’s spent an awful lot of time thinking about that subject.

          • HeilMary1

Such “experts” obviously never witnessed childbirth complications and birth defects.

          • AveMaria02

Their sexual orientation does not bother me. I am attracted to members of the same sex (as well as the opposite sex) too. What bothers me is their “marriage” and the reason why it bothers me is because it is gravely sinful and destructive to our society.

          • RonPaul2012

I would say that Catholic priests raping little kids is more destructive to society.

Btw, I would like, we would all like, if you could demonstrate how gay marriage will ‘destroy’ society.

Lay out a detailed plan of how this will happen.

          • Jennifer Starr

Not everyone believes that it is a sin and not everyone follows your particular faith. You may consider it the ‘one true whatever’, but you have to accept that not everyone does. And we do not live in a theocracy. Providing that we’re talking about consenting adults, I don’t spend a lot of time obsessing over the marriages of others. I consider that to be their business and not mine. So why do you?

          • AveMaria02

There are reasons besides religious reasons to ban “gay marriage”. One of those reasons is because “gay marriage” will fundamentally alter society in a very bad way. Indeed, it already has. A florist, baker, and photographer have each had their freedom of religion/conscience violated by the government for refusing to serve a “gay wedding”.

          • CJ99

Being a huge asshole and ruining the lives of others cause of your huge ego is not “conscience”. As others have noted you have no problem with preists raping young kids repeatedly. You are not “holy” but instead just an insolent shit flinger.

          • HeilMary1

There is nothing merciful or holy about her snobby sadism.

          • RonPaul2012

Explain, in great detail, how gay marriage will harm society.

            Enough with the baseless accusations.

            Argue your point.

          • CJ99

The only point is under its tinfoil hat. avemaria is living proof that tinfoil hat don’t work against “teh cia mind control rayz!!”

          • expect_resistance

Love is the Law! I live in Minnesota and our state legalized same-sex marriage this year and Minnesota has not fallen apart. The quality of life for Minnesotans has been improved by making same-sex marriage legal. My LGBT friends in long-term relationship are basically married, now if they get married they will have all of the legal rights that go with marriage. Like being able to see your partner/spouse in the hospital.

In MN Religious organizations are exempt from being required to marry same-sex couples. Business are not exempt. So there is no problem with “freedom of religion.” It would be really stupid for a business owner to deny services or products to someone who is LGTB, because of their short-sighted narrow-minded homophobia. This is an economic boost for MN. According to a study by The Williams Institute, same-sex marriage in MN will bring an estimated $42 million to the economy by an increase in wedding and state tourism. I see this as a win-win for everybody. Love is the law!

(“Love is the Law” – a song by The Suburbs, a MN band was the “unofficial” anthem of the movement to legalize same-sex marriage in MN. They played this at the post legalization party)

          • L-dan

No, they have been required, as businesses that serve the public, to do so without bias. I can no more refuse to serve gay patrons than black ones. I cannot require men and women to remain in separate parts of the shop. In short, I can’t impose my religious beliefs on the general public.

This varies from state to state of course.

Frankly, if I were getting married, I’d rather not give my money to bigots. But I can imagine the issues in smaller communities where you may only have one florist.

          • AveMaria02

The law that requires them to serve “gay weddings” is an unjust law because it does violate the business owners/employees freedom of religion.

          • L-dan

There was a time when many churches were interpreting the Bible so as to justify considering black people as second class citizens (at best). Would it be unjust to require florists and bakers to serve the public equally when they felt their religion meant turning away interracial couples getting married?

I don’t really see how one can legitimately draw those lines. Nor is it in the public interest to allow them to, leaving people to wonder which religious rules their town’s hairdresser or formal wear shop will be adhering to this month.

          • AveMaria02

If a person was using their religion to justify discriminating against interracial couples then that would be wrong. That would be unjust discrimination.

          • RonPaul2012

Then why is it not unjust to discriminate against gays?

Your bible supports 1) slavery 2) was used to support the enslavement of black people because they are supposedly ‘ descended from cain’ or somesuch

          • L-dan

So using the bible for one type of discrimination is unjust.

But it is unjust to not allow people to discriminate based on the bible if it’s another sort of discrimination.

How does this make sense in your head? And how could you expect the laws to follow so illogical a path?

          • AveMaria02

You forget the fact that race is an inherent quality of a person. A person discriminating against interracial couples is discriminating on the basis of their skin color. However, a person who refuses to serve a gay wedding is not discriminating against the people because of their sexual orientation. Rather, they are discriminating against them because their actions (that of “marrying” someone of the same sex) are wrong.

          • RonPaul2012

Recent studies have shown that there may very well be a gay gene.

            http://www.livescience.com/2623-gays-dont-extinct.html

In other words, gays really are *born this way*.

You are asking them to go against their very nature because you think their nature is sinful. Just as your racist forebears (the RCC owned slaves too you know) thought that being black was inherently sinful, and therefore, used that to justify slavery.

          • fiona64

No, they’re discriminating against them because of their sexual orientation … which is just as inherent as one’s ethnicity.

          • fiona64

And you are apparently not old enough to remember when the Bible was used as an excuse to do just that. I *am.* I will be 50 years old tomorrow. Loving v. Virginia was decided during my lifetime; I was three. Five years later, my dad gave away the bride at a wedding between one of his students (an African-American) and his Caucasian fiancee; her own parents refused to attend because she was marrying a “n*****, and that’s against the Bible.”

          • expect_resistance

            Great point.

            Happy birthday!!!!!!!

          • Jennifer Starr

Hope you have a most Happy Birthday and a wonderful day tomorrow–celebrate and treat yourself to something nice :)

          • L-dan

Happy birthday! That’s a nice round one.

          • RonPaul2012

            Yeah fiona, Happy bday!!!

You get Helen, and Holly, this year!!

I said to Jenn, on the other thread, that Helen and Holly should get gay married.

            We can dream, can’t we?

            Ron Paul 2012!!!

Oh, here’s one little gift for you, with shades of good ol’ Joseph Polanco. Heard this on a pro-lie forum:

This is a result of affirming the consequent, which is confused by many
with modus tollens, but the latter is valid whereas the former is a
            fallacy.

modus tollens is like totally my next nym, after defamate

          • Ella Warnock

            Happy birthday, fiona!

          • Jennifer Starr

Sexual preference is an inherent quality. And there is nothing wrong with an adult wanting to join in a loving commitment with another adult that they share an attraction with and affection for.

          • AveMaria02

Everybody, regardless of their sexual orientation, is called to a life of chastity.

          • Jennifer Starr

Married people as well? What are you going on about?

          • expect_resistance

What are you talking about? I certainly wasn’t called to that life. I love sex and orgasms too.

          • CJ99

Haven’t seen a commandment about orgams yet. perhaps 1 should be written starting with “thou shalt have…..”

          • RonPaul2012

aww, is poor little AveMaria02 spiteful because no one wants to fuck her? So she thinks that no one else should get fucked either?

          • CJ99

I’d shudder if that mountain of misogyny ever had kids. There’s no doubt they’d grow up horribly abused.

          • fiona64

Well, you rock on with that, sweetie. Other people need not do so.

          • colleen2

You Opus Dei folks are so humble.

          • HeilMary1

Nope, that dystopia was invented by herders who had zero idea of where diseases came from, hence, the pedophile Vatican’s invention of priestly “celibacy” to free husbands from urine- and feces-leaking brood mares. Imagine Hugh Hefner outlawing marriages to flat-chested brunettes! That is how sick and petty your genocide cult is!

          • CJ99

that’s no more true than you were called by good to be stupid. but unlike other people you deliberately chose to be ignorant.

          • L-dan

            err… no

Race and sexual orientation are both inherent qualities to the best of our knowledge. Try getting a heterosexual person to turn themselves homosexual if you want to see how easy it is. (not even getting into bi and other sexual at the moment)

Refusing to marry either because you feel they are wrong to marry is exactly the same.

“I don’t think white people should be able to marry black people. They’re fine otherwise, but really shouldn’t marry.” is precisely the same as “I don’t think gay people should be able to marry each other. They’re fine otherwise, but really shouldn’t marry.” Or even, “I think men should marry women. Men marrying men, and women marrying women is just wrong.”

“I don’t think it’s right for brides to wear black, so I won’t provide services to weddings where there’s a black wedding dress in evidence.”

Pastafarian: “They’re not serving an approved matrimonial pasta dish at the reception, in honor of his noodlyness who ties all unions together. I won’t cater for such an abomination.”

Why should any of these be a reason to refuse service?

          • HeilMary1

By Ave’s petty body parts rules, mastectomied women’s marriages would be automatically annulled and the Vatican in fact has often banned marriages for the infertile and disabled.

          • HeilMary1

No, hypocrite bigot, you are punishing other people for being born XXY LIKE YOURSELF, thanks to Catholic Natural Family “Planning” fertilization anomalies! XXY folks have the right to marry the people they prefer. YOUR pedophile-serving Vatican made them that way, and now you insist it’s merciful to punish them for being born intersexed as predicted?! Should they have been aborted instead to avoid the “sin” of same sex unions? That’s like amputating people’s limbs, then firing them for being the very amputees YOU MADE THEM! You can’t be anti-abortion and anti-intersex at the same time because ALL fetuses are intersexed to some degree!

          • CJ99

You gave up the right to use the race card when you became an embarrasment to the entire human race.

          • HeilMary1

But pompous Nazi you insists on punishing couples for simply being born XXY like you! Suppose I insisted YOU should be banned from marrying ANYONE because your parents’ NFP obedience made YOU XXY like the couples you bash?

          • HeilMary1

Such equality laws simply keep NAZIS like you from violating their civil rights. Keep in mind NFP dramatically increases intersex syndromes in infants, so you are tormenting LGBT folks for being exactly as your hate cult forced them to be born! You are truly disgusting!

          • CJ99

No thats just unjustifiably stupid hate mongering.

          • fiona64

Sweetie, let me explain Business Law 101 to you. When you open up a public accommodation (such as a bakery, a florist, or a photography studio) and hang your shingle out to do business, you have created a separation between yourself and your business entity for purposes of protecting assets. Your business entity does not have “freedom of religion,” you do. You cannot, under the law, discriminate against the (wait for it) *public* when you run a public accommodation. This was well established in the 1960s, BTW, with the Civil Rights Act. You are basically saying that a gay couple should be forced to sit in the back of the bus or drink from a separate water fountain — which is complete and utter bullshit.

          • HeilMary1

And Ave would never imposed such apartheid rules on closet nuns and priests who keep same sex lovers on the side! Hypocrites are fine with her!

          • CJ99

Cause that guy calling himself “avemaria” is blowing smock out his butt. he only cares about controlling the lives of others. In the end he’s just like those “pinko commies” he’s still so deathly afraid of.

          • CJ99

Congratulations you just confirmed that your both a hypocrite and a buffoon. I’d remind you how much of a liar you are but everyone can see that for themselves.

          • HeilMary1

You hypocrites who force millions of women to die from childbirth are infinitely more destructive to overpopulated impoverished societies than healthy child-free LGBT couples. You and your hate cult are gravely offensive to God/Goddess. And the reason why you are attracted to both sexes is because your parents’ reliance on UNnatural Family Cramming made you intersexed! Perhaps you are an XY/XX chimera “singleton” as a result of your mother ovulating more than once in one cycle (which NFP bullies claim is impossible).

        • CJ99

Nope thats the real world. Y’know that thing you scorn & despise cause it doesn’t fit your delusions.

        • fiona64

Why are you so angry at other people’s happiness? Just curious …

        • HeilMary1

I’m deeply ashamed of your Nazi-coddling hate cult!

    • fiona64

That’s funny; I went to school in Indiana, which was beyond a doubt the most backwoods, delightedly ignorant place I had been before or since. I wouldn’t brag about being a “Hoosier,” let alone saying such nasty things to a teenaged columnist. I’m embarrassed for you.

    • marshmallow

You are a hateful bigot and you should be ashamed.

    • CJ99

As a denizen of planet earth I’m ashamed to be human cause of vengeful assholes just like you.

    • jerichothered

As a human being- I am ashamed of your bigotry.
Hatred like yours is what is driving people away from “your”
      Religion.
You do not follow in christ’s teachings

      • AveMaria02

I am not hateful at all.

        • Jennifer Starr

          What you said was.

          • AveMaria02

If you want to believe that then go right ahead but the truth is that it was not hateful in the least.

          • RonPaul2012

Oh no, referring to gay marriage and to gays as an ‘abomination’ is pretty hateful, sweetie.

          • CJ99

You wouldn’t know the truth if the creator himself smacked your butt with it. You don’t want to know the real world. If you did your narcicsistic fantasy would be demolished.

          • colleen2

I think this person has substituted self reflection and honesty (and, truth be told, personal dignity) for dogma and doctrine. The result is not something anyone sane would want to emulate or even live next door to.

        • RonPaul2012

OH no, you’re hateful all right

        • fiona64

Maybe not, but your words are …

        • CJ99

Yeah you’re filled with nothing but hate. You’re also a very amatuerish liar. I’d tell you to kiss my butt, but considering where your lips have been I wouldn’t touch you with rubber gloves on.

        • L-dan

And I quote: “I am deeply ashamed of the fact that Illinois has passed a law allowing the abomination known as “gay marriage””

First: You’re ashamed. Why? It’s not your state, nor do you share anything in common so as to feel ashamed that they’re reflecting badly upon you. For example, I feel ashamed when avowed feminists say something utterly tone deaf regarding race…because I don’t want that sort of ignorance associated with a movement I consider myself a part of.

Second: Calling something an abomination is pretty hateful when directed at people. And make no mistake, trying to aim it ‘merely’ at the institution while saying that you think gay people are wonderful, is a dodge. If I tell you that I think Christianity is an abomination, I’m sure you’re going to tell me that I’m being hateful toward Christians, right?

Third: The quote marks “gay marriage”. You’ve decided, regardless of the reality, that the marriage of people who are not of opposite genders isn’t real or valid. It’s pretty hateful to tell someone that their life isn’t valid, their experiences-which include getting married-aren’t valid.

I really don’t see why families gaining access to all of the legal benefits of marriage (like hospital visitation, survivor’s benefits, etc.) is such an abomination to you. But go on living in your dying corner of the world. By the time I die, I expect the frothing right wing to be holed up in strange little communities, like the Amish, and with about as much influence on the rest of the world.

          • CJ99

Christianity like so many religions really is a cult of hate.

          • AveMaria02

I do not hate gay people in the least. I do hate any sinful actions that they might make though such as entering into a “gay marriage” or being unchaste.

          • Jennifer Starr

Are you one of those people who thinks that gay people should remain celibate forever or force themselves into a straight marriage that they don’t want for the ‘good’ of society? Or are you one of the ‘pray the gay away’ folks?

          • AveMaria02

I do believe that gay people should remain celibate forever. I do not think that they should force themselves into a straight marriage for the good of society. If they can marry a person of the opposite sex and be happy with that then by all means, let them do it.

          • RonPaul2012

You still need to explain how gay marriage will destroy society.

            IN detail.

          • Jennifer Starr

Maybe she’s worried she’ll be forced to marry a woman *snort* Honestly I don’t know. I’ve talked to people who tell me that a gay marriage will somehow ‘devalue’ their marriage, but strangely enough, when you ask them if they’ll get divorced when gay marriage is allowed, they don’t answer.

          • AveMaria02

I have no fear whatsoever that I will be forced to marry a woman. I do have a fear that legalizing “gay marriage” will have a devastating effect on society.

          • RonPaul2012

Then explain HOW it will devastate society.

          • AveMaria02

As I said before, I am not going to waste any more time defending my beliefs. If you care that much about the Truth then you will investigate for your self.

          • RonPaul2012

It’s because you CANNOT defend them.

          • AveMaria02

Actually I can but I do not wish to waste time doing so.

          • RonPaul2012

            That’s a cop-out if I ever heard one.

          • CJ99

Nope sorry your still just an arrogant lying piece of crap.

          • HeilMary1

You have NO proof, just your own bigoted ignorance.

          • Jennifer Starr

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together–no, wait–that’s Ghostbusters II.

          • Jennifer Starr

And your fear about this subject is way out of proportion to actual reality. Several states have legalized gay marriage and the sky has not fallen yet. I honestly don’t lose any sleep over who someone else is marrying, and you shouldn’t either. Relax.

          • AveMaria02

I never once said that the sky will fall.

That said, as for the devastating effects on society, it could take many years, if not decades, before the effects are seen. I have no idea.

          • RonPaul2012

then you don’t actually know and are talking out of your ass

you want to punish people for simply being born the ‘wrong’ way and don’t even have any evidence to back up your claim

btw, it was once predicted by good religious people such as yourself that society would fall apart if 1) slavery was illegal 2) blacks were allowed to marry whites

          • AveMaria02

Actually I do know that it will have a devastating effect on society.

          • Jennifer Starr

            How?

          • AveMaria02

For one thing public schools will have to start teaching that a “family” can consist of two men or two women and their children. This will normalize homosexual sexual relations. Before the vast majority of society will see absolutely nothing wrong with unchaste homosexual relations.

          • Jennifer Starr

I’m sorry, but I see nothing wrong with it now. Families can be different and still be a loving unit. Every family does not have to be just like mine to make me happy.

          • RonPaul2012

There is nothing wrong with that.

            Give us an actual harm.

Like, will gay marriage result in an asteroid hitting the earth?

          • Jennifer Starr

That’s what Pat Robertson still thinks, I believe

          • CJ99

The heavens gate cult believed the same thing, except they said it was a coment with a mothership inside.

          • fiona64

And so what? Not every family is cut from a cookie-cutter, you know. Some families have a mom and dad, some have only a mom or dad, some have two moms or two dads. Some have grandparents rearing their grandkids. Some families are adoptive, not biological. Some families are inter-ethnic. Oh, the horror! We might have to teach that people are *different.* Whatever shall we do?

          • HeilMary1

And 50% of Catholic men trade in their brood mares for child-free “hotties” like Catholic Call-Girl-ista “Gingrich”.

          • HeilMary1

Where is your hypocrite outrage over priests who keep male and female lovers, and GOP men who trade in their obstetric bladder and bowel-incontinent brood mares for child-free hotties?

          • L-dan

And…this ruins society how? Because an entire group of people can expect to be seen as normal and maybe not worried about being harassed or killed for simply not loving the correct person?

Oh wait. You mean that the society *you* knew will fall apart because you can no longer simply teach your children that homosexuality is wrong without anything external challenging that view. OK, ok…I see that indeed the society you knew will be ruined. Sort of the way it was when most people came around to the idea that the Earth circles the Sun rather than vice versa.

I’m not remotely sorry about that. I don’t think that your comfort should come at the cost to all of those other families. The fact that you think your comfort and ability to sell your opinion as the unchallenged ‘truth’ is more important than the lives of thousands of individuals and families is pretty sad.

          • Ineedacoffee

            Oh the horror!
Not every family is mum, dad, 2 kids, a dog and white picket fence

          • CJ99

Theres a cat living in our house with us but no dog, heathen blasphemers! Sacrilige even!

          • HeilMary1

Then you are a fine example of a disgusting hypocrite born to undiagnosed intersex parents!

          • Jennifer Starr

There are worse things that people do and continue to do in society that worry me a hell of a lot more than two men or two women deciding to share their lives together. Why does this particular subject bother you so much?

          • AveMaria02

It bothers me so much because I do not want people who come after to me to live in a society with depraved moral values.

          • Jennifer Starr

It bothers me that people rob, and cheat, and rape and murder. It bothers me that people are needlessly cruel to one another or continue to see people of a different race, religion or creed, or any kind of difference as somehow being inferior to themselves. Small-mindedness and bigotry bothers me. Two people choosing to marry and love one another doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, it gives me hope for society.

          • HeilMary1

Why don’t you police your own hypocrite priests, nuns and wife-dumping Rethug politicians like Newt Gingrich?

          • HeilMary1

Where is your outrage over gay priests and nuns who shack up with their same sex lovers on parishioners’ donations? Every collection plate you contribute to funds the secret sex lives of nuns and priests, including the abortions priests force on their female conquests!

          • CJ99

If you wanted to save the world you’d stop emitting verbal flatulance.

          • Jennifer Starr

You know what? Gay people are not out to get you, or hurt you, or make you depressed. They’re not out to ‘ruin America’, ‘destroy society’ or ‘destroy the American family’. All they’re trying to do is live their lives like the rest of us, to be with the person they love, to marry and raise families of their own if they so choose. And none of that is personally directed towards you. To quote an old Disney song, there’s room for everyone in this world, and not everyone is required to be, live and think like you. Live your own life, be happy, and allow others to live theirs.

          • RonPaul2012

Y u want destroy society Jenifer?!

          • Jennifer Starr

Oh, I don’t know. There was nothing good on TV that day…… ;)

          • AveMaria02

I never said that they were. However, “gay marriage” will ruin society.

          • Jennifer Starr

This same baseless assertion. Just save it, okay? We can use it to fertilize the tomatoes.

          • CJ99

eewww, not the tomatoes, use it on something nobody likes, say brussel sprouts or anchovies (yeah I know they’re notta veg but seriously who likes those things?)

          • HeilMary1

You adulterous overpopulation breeders are the biggest threat to our polluted planet. And since everyone is intersexed to some degree, all “straight” marriages are already same sex. Your parents’ marriage was same sex, technically, so get over your ignorant straw man fears.

          • L-dan

You keep repeating this, while refusing to back it up. Put up or shut up. Either you come up with an actual argument beyond “because I said so” or you have no leg to stand on when people say you’re an idiot for having stupid, unfounded beliefs like this.

          • Ineedacoffee

            Religion ruins society

          • HeilMary1

I already fear the devastating abuse that pedophile and playboy priests got my straight parents to inflict on me, you colossal idiot.

          • Ineedacoffee

You still have not said what is so devastating
We had gay marriage legalised here in one of our states for a week. Overturned by our arrogant bible bashing PM
But in that week many couples got married and
No plagues, no sky falling, no oceans of blood, no lightning bolts smiting from the sky. The paper that straight marriages is written on didnt crumble and all the churches are still standing
            So whats the issue?

          • CJ99

The delicious irony being the trolls commentary has now been smited from this article.

          • HeilMary1

Her kind are simply livid that LGBT brides are much prettier!

          • AveMaria02

I provided a link earlier but apparently you did not look at it.

          • RonPaul2012

            No you didn’t.

How about explaining in your own words.

          • AveMaria02

I actually did provide a link. I am guessing it wasn’t posted. I know that after I post a comment with a link it tells me that it is awaiting moderation. Its possible that the moderator did not allow my comment to be posted.

That said, I am not going to explain it in my own words. I do not wish to waste a lot of time defending my beliefs on this site. If you care about the Truth then you will take the time to investigate the matter for yourself. If instead you would rather be a mindless sheep of the left then you will go on believing as you do without daring to question your beliefs.

          • RonPaul2012

If you are going to make baseless assertions and then claim that you are right and that gays deserve to be punished as sinners then you had better be prepared to back up your claims.

Coming in here and demanding evidence from us whilst saying ‘you are wrong because I say so’ does not a compelling argument make. In fact, it makes you look like a fool.

          • AveMaria02

The sad fact is that you are the one who is a fool. You have been deluded by the father of lies, Satan himself.

          • RonPaul2012

yeah? I have been deluded by Satan because I believe that gays should be treated as people not abominations?

what the fuck is wrong with you?

          • AveMaria02

I also believe that gays should be treated as people and not as abominations. I never once even said that gay people are abominations. I said that unchaste homosexual behavior is an abomination.

          • RonPaul2012

Yes, you believe that they should not have the same rights as other people because you don’t like how they were born.

That is to treat them as subhumans you bigot.

          • AveMaria02

Are you 10 years old or are you an adult? If you’re an adult then act like one and quit calling people names.

          • RonPaul2012

You are a bigot. This is a fact.

          • HeilMary1

YOU grow up, Catholic schoolyard bully!

          • fiona64

If you don’t want to be called out for your bigotry, you might want to stop being a bigot …

          • CJ99

What your too ignorant to realize is when you drop your pants & moon the world your daring the rest of humanity to kick your ass.

          • Jennifer Starr

If you don’t believe that they should be able to have normal relationships and commitments with the people that they are attracted to just like heterosexual people, then are you are treating them like second-class citizens.

          • colleen2

I also believe that gays should be treated as people and not as abominations.>

when are you and your ‘faith’ and your political going to start then? You’re simply unable to speak the truth.

          • HeilMary1

YOU are the only abomination here, you pompous heretic idiot. Everyone is born intersexed to some degree, so any “sanctified straight” sex you have is SAME SEX.

          • HeilMary1

So whines an apologist for the genocidal Vatican cult!

          • CJ99

Satan is what you see in the mirror every morning whilst shaving. DUH

          • colleen2

Coming in here and demanding evidence from us whilst saying ‘you are
wrong because I say so’ does not a compelling argument make. In fact, it
makes you look like a fool.

This is a Republican religious right woman. They aren’t very bright, they lie constantly and they have the compassion of a great white shark. But they are VERY good at whining and making demands of others. Whining and making demands is how the silly fuckers survive.

          • Jennifer Starr

If you bring your views to a forum, it generally falls to you to support those views, other than just shrieking Satan! Hell! Aieee! .

          • HeilMary1

Mindless sheep YOU obeys heretic Nazi poops and pedophile priests and you denounce OUR beliefs and morals?!

          • Ella Warnock

“Mindless sheep” is a pretty ironic statement from the one who “believes everything the catholic church teaches.” Yeah, somebody’s not thinking for herself here, darlin’, but it isn’t any of us.

          • CJ99

your beliefs are indefensible hate mongering, yet you’ve already wasted many peoples time here. The reason you won’t answer is you know your a lying hate filled cretin.

          • Jennifer Starr

And why should they remain celibate forever? Because it’ll make your ‘church’ happy? Because it’ll make you happy? Why are you so obsessed with sexual activity between consenting adults? Isn’t that their business and not yours? And again, no theocracy in this country so don’t come back with the ‘it’s a sin’ blah blah blah, because not everyone sees it that way.

          • AveMaria02

Because it will make God happy and because being chaste is much better for their soul than being unchaste.

          • RonPaul2012

Which god? There are thousands, like, close to 30,000 in all of history.

Who says your god is right?

And why is it better for their soul? you think they will go to hell if they have sex?

          • Jennifer Starr

Which god? Whose god? And why the hell is it up to you to decide what’s better for their soul?

          • AveMaria02

The only God Who is the Most Holy Trinity.

Also, it is not up to me to decide what’s better for their soul. God already decided that. I am only repeating what He decided.

          • RonPaul2012

There is no proof that you god is the one true god.

After all, the koran claims the same thing. As does every other religion. And they believe just as strongly as you do.

          • L-dan

You realize that if this nonsense only matters to God, and apparently to you as you judge in his name, there’s very little reason to go spewing it at other people? What motive do you have for telling other people that they’re bad and naughty in your eyes when they so obviously do not care about the rules of your made up God?

Did your parents (or Walt Disney) never teach you that if you can’t say something nice, it’s often better to say nothing at all?

          • AveMaria02

Its a spiritual work of mercy known as admonishing sinners.

          • RonPaul2012

Shaming people because they do not act the way you think they should based on an old book written by a bunch of ignorant goat herders is not *mercy*

          • AveMaria02

That is your opinion and your opinion is false.

          • RonPaul2012

            Prove it.

            Don’t just make baseless assertions.

          • fiona64

Opinions cannot be true or false; they are merely opinions. I’m waiting for you to cite some *facts* (as opposed to your opinions), frankly …

          • HeilMary1

You worship false idols, you pompous pharisee.

          • CJ99

The pharisee put itself in the position of god meteing out smitings right & left. The fool “avemaria” worships itself.

          • L-dan

Awww…you call “I know better than you do”style arrogance mercy.

Let me clue you in, most people don’t want that form of mercy. Nor does anyone see it as merciful save those deluded by your myths. So you get to feel all good about yourself for making other people’s days and lives that little bit more annoying (at best).

At worst, this “we know better than you” shit kills people and makes their lives measurably worse.

See *there’s* an abomination for you.

          • AveMaria02

Actually it is merciful. The reason is because if we call someone out on their sins then hopefully they will repent and make it to Heaven someday.

That said, we Catholics do not judge the state of a person’s soul. I have no idea whether you or anyone else is in a state of mortal sin or not. However, I do know that certain actions are gravely sinful.

          • RonPaul2012

            It’s not merciful.

It’s downright cruel. Not everyone has your beliefs. You are essentially forcing your religious beliefs on people and punishing them for refusing to live the way you think they should.

You are a bigoted piece of trash and you dress it all up with fancy words about mercy and love. You have no love. Only hate for people who will not live their lives the way you think they should.

Why are you so worried about how other people have sex? How does it affect you exactly? and you still haven’t provided us with PROOF or even a shred of valid logical reasoning to back up your claim that homosexuality will destroy society.

            Destroy society HOW exactly?

Muslims believe that all Christians are inherently sinful and that they will never make it to muslim heaven. In fact, they think you are WORSE because you are only good so that you can get into heaven. That isn’t genuine faith – that’s behaving so you can get something out of it. It’s insincere.

Anyways, do muslims have the right to mistreat Christians because they believe that you’re all sinners and should be forced to repent and someday make it to muslim heaven?

          • AveMaria02

Actually it is merciful whether you want to believe it is or not. If you were looking at things from an eternal perspective and from a perspective of Truth like I am, you would agree with me. However, Satan has deluded you into thinking that I am being cruel when in fact I am merciful. That is not surprising since Satan is the father of lies and he has convinced you to believe a lie. I am also being loving but again Satan has convinced you to believe that I am being hateful when in reality, I am being loving.

Why do I care about how other people have sex? I care about how other people have sex because depending on how they do it, it can be gravely sinful which can result in them spending an eternity in Hell separated from God. There is also the fact that certain types of sex carry a much greater risk of STDs than others.

As far as how “gay marriage” will destroy society, I provided a link earlier but apparently you did not look at it.

As for whether or not Muslims have the right to mistreat Christians because they believe we are sinners, I think the answer would depend on how you define “mistreat”.

          • RonPaul2012

You did not provide a link. I saw no such notification and I would have even if it would have been sent into moderation.

            Explain yourself.

          • Jennifer Starr

Telling people they’re deluded by Satan and going to hell for not believing as you do is not loving or merciful.

          • AveMaria02

            Its called a warning.

If there was a blind person walking towards the edge of the cliff with no sign of stopping, don’t you think it would be merciful and loving to warn them of the consequences if they continue to walk so that way they can stop?

          • RonPaul2012

Except that gay people won’t be going to hell. Your irrational beliefs are not real. You want to force people to live by your standards all based on a a belief in something that may or may not exist.

You are imposing YOUR religious beliefs on people by telling them how to lead their lives.

Do you believe that gay people should be imprisoned for having gay sex?

          • HeilMary1

I am warning you to renounce your mother-killing pedophile heresies so that you don’t burn eternally in hell with the other Vatican fetal idolaters, mother killers and child rapists!

          • CJ99

It looks like disqus has already renounced the bigots entire string of comments so far.

          • RonPaul2012

Meh, I wish they’d keep the vile comments around. I think people need to see how hateful pro-lifers truly are.

          • CJ99

Yet here you are trying to push others off the very same cliff with glee in your eyes as you do so.

          • colleen2

Your ‘faith’ has made you stupid and arrogant.

          • expect_resistance

Really why do you care “how other people have sex?” Do you realize strait people do the same things gay people do? Have you ever watched strait sex porn? Without going into detail same-sex couples aren’t the only ones having anal or oral sex.

          • HeilMary1

Satan has deluded YOU into thinking your sadistic sanctimony is holy and merciful. I’ll bet you also commit criminal Munchausen by Proxy medical malpractice just like my pharisee mom! Straight sex that shreds lady parts during childbirth is far more deadly than any gay sex, you hateful idiot!

          • CJ99

I too have no doubt the delusional lunatic isn’t listening to the Creator but quite the opposite.

          • L-dan

There is no link provided in any of your posts above. Perhaps moderation ate the link. Perhaps you could summarize the horrible effects upon society?

As for the rest, since I have no more proof that your God, or those interpreting his supposed views, are any more true than the ideals espoused by any other god, goddess, or noodley assemblage, I’m going to go on thinking you’re deluded by fairy tales that make no sense to me. Therefore, your warnings just sound stupid and nonsensical.

I mean..I could go on about how sinful you are for ignoring the obvious signs of heavenly disfavor as overpopulation creates all manner of problems on this world we were given to care for. Obviously, the solution is for the vast majority of the population to enter properly divine marriages with members of their own sex so as to reduce the chances of accidental progeny. All offspring should be carefully planned and produced only when the clerical prognosticators declare the time is right. To believe otherwise not only dooms your immortal soul for being so foolish as to ignore clear divine communication, but dooms the rest of world for your selfishness. *tch*

          • CJ99

If fanatics like you had their way we’d be living in a fascist theocracy suffering an eternal inquisitiion mere for being human. In modern terms it would be like the book “the handmaids tail” or that movie “equalibrium”.

The hell you so cheerfully want to inflict on everyone else is listening to you hate filled bigotry so again PISS OFF.

          • Ineedacoffee

ROFL at this load of dog crap

          • colleen2

You know the Catholic church used to insist that they were engaged in acts of mercy when they tortured and burned women at the stake for heresy. And nothing has changed,. They still insist on their ‘love’ and ‘mercy’ when they kill women whose bodies can’t sustain a pregnancy . They are endlessly disgusting.

          • expect_resistance

It’s sadistic. It’s like an abuser saying I’m hitting you because I love you. There is no love or mercy it’s only oppression by abusive patriarchal religions.

          • CJ99

Colour me surprised if anyone seriously religious makes it into heaven at all. Religions not a way to connect to the creator its a barrier that cuts us off from the creator & each other.

          • L-dan

You realize you still haven’t answered the question as to how gay marriage will damage society?

As for your ‘mercy’, would you find yourself very receptive to being on the receiving end of Hindu or Muslim mercy of a similar sort? I imagine you would find yourself quite annoyed if their followers were busy telling you how sinful you were and trying to save your soul by getting you to repent of your belief in a false god (to their way of thinking).

          • expect_resistance

AveMaria is full of crap and doesn’t have an answer.

Same-sex marriage and LGBT rights will only improve our society. AvaMaria’s views will only hurt our society.

          • HeilMary1

Your worship of fetuses and pedophile priests is gravely sinful idolatry, you pompous pervert!

          • CJ99

“That said, we Catholics do not judge the state of a person’s soul.”

You make that completely unjstified claim (aka a lie) yet you go on with hate filled judgements on others. Yet you remain deliberately ignorant of your own “grave sins”. By your own actions, words & judgements you have declared yourself more of a satanist than christian.

          • Jennifer Starr

I knew that’s what we were missing on New Years–our ‘admonishment’ from Ms. Holier than Thou.

          • AveMaria02

            Go cry me a river.

          • Jennifer Starr

Yeah, it’s more a kind of amusement….if I’m crying it’s because I’m laughing so damn hard.

          • AveMaria02

If you end up in Hell someday because of your views, do you think you’ll still be laughing then? Somehow I don’t think you will be. But then again, I am just going to hope and pray that you don’t end up in Hell. I’d like to see you in Heaven someday.

          • RonPaul2012

Hell is a human invention. It wasn’t even in the OT.

          • fiona64

I’d like to see you in Heaven someday.

I think you’re going to be in for a rude awakening if you think you’ll land in Heaven for the way you treated people here on Earth …

          • HeilMary1

            Amen!

          • HeilMary1

You belong in hell, you pedophile priest suck-up fascist pharisee!

          • CJ99

Normally I’d be shocked when someone said that. but in this case it fits quite well.

          • L-dan

Given the people who seem sure they’ll be in heaven, and the people they claim will be in hell, I’m pretty sure I’d rather be in hell; the company is better.

Not that I think either one exists.

          • CJ99

Anyone finding themselves in hell will certainly be meeting you there. You however won’t be seeing any of us in there with you.

          • Ineedacoffee

I wont end up in hell, there is no such thing.
            just like heaven.

          • RonPaul2012

            Wow, aren’t you loving.

Then again, you think rape victims should die in childbirth.

          • colleen2

Oh, feel the ‘love’ and ‘compassion’.

          • HeilMary1

She’s exactly the type that voted for anti-abortion, anti-gay Catholic Hitler!

          • fiona64

Everyone, please open your hymnals to number 22 and sing along with me: “And they will know we are Christians by our love, by our love …”

          • HeilMary1

Save that for your pedophile priests, you disgusting pharisee!

          • CJ99

            Piss off.

          • colleen2

Oh, so your hobby is a “spiritual work of mercy”? What a sick and degenerate religion you follow.

          • HeilMary1

Then I’m admonishing you for your heretic hatemonging!

          • Jld33

Isn’t there some spiritual work that you could do that might *HELP* someone?

          • CJ99

Nope its a mismash of blatant bullshit that only exists in your twisted mind. You’ve shown no mercy, don’t expect it in return.

          • HeilMary1

You are disgusting for believing the genocidal lies of mother-killing pedophile priests!

          • CJ99

you have no idea what the creator said. hence your still a brazen liar. even your own bible nowhere states “hate thy neighbours & opress them in a totalitarian theocracy”

Oh yeah, the “holy trinity” isn’t larry curly & moe that you’ve been listening to ;P

          • Ineedacoffee

Show me your facts on paper scientifically proving god exists please
            Bible does not count

          • CJ99

I haven’t heard of anybody who’s actually seen the creator here on earth. If they have they’ve kept very quite about it rightfully so. I have no doubt that anyone had and said so publicly would instantly become a target of bigots like avemaria.

Btw televangelists don’t count, none of them has any inkling of who the creator really is and its abundantly clear from their various broadcasts.

          • CJ99

If that delusional was standing in front of the creator he/she would still be oblivious to who the creator is.

          • HeilMary1

If God/Goddess disapproves of same sex couples, why does he/she make EVERYONE intersexed to some degree?? If you have older brothers or a male twin, I guarantee you that you have some of their XY chromosomes among your XX chromosomes. And if chastity is so important to your sky fairy, why hasn’t he/she punished pedophile priests and adulterers like Newt Gingrich?? You are full of crap and you know it!

          • CJ99

That is what those of us on earth call Bullshit. I have little doubt the creator disavows you completely. But since you believe in god who do you think gave humanity the abilty to have sex? I’ll give you a hint: its he who created them in his own image.

          • HeilMary1

Bigot, are you married? Did you know all “straight” marriages are technically same sex, since everyone is intersexed to some degree?

          • CJ99

After that you sure as hell better not be married or have any kids. It would be be an intolerable abuse to any children to be subjected to your unjustified vileness.

          • CJ99

You are a hate filled bigot. Denying it also makes you a liar & very delusional. the heaven you so desparately crave and want to deny everyone else is not what you think it is. Don’t count on spending any time there either. I have no doubts they won’t let hate filled fiends such as you walk among them.

          • AveMaria02

I am not a liar and I am not delusional. However, I can say for sure that you are full of hate. Only a person who is full of hate would make a comment like yours to someone they don’t know.

          • RonPaul2012

Only a person who is full of hate would deny the humanity of gays because she thinks they will all go to hell if they don’t believe the way she thinks they will.

          • AveMaria02

I did not deny the humanity of gays. I only said that they should live a life of chastity.

          • RonPaul2012

Which denies their humanity. Which punishes them for how they were born.

          • colleen2

Perhaps you should start insisting on chastity in your rape prone clergy.

          • HeilMary1

And are YOU “chaste”? What is so sanctified about your stinking private parts (undiagnosed intersexed, I’m sure!) that you can use yours, but diagnosed intersex people are unworthy of using theirs with their preferred partners?? Your sanctimony and self-exempting hypocrisies are disgusting.

          • CJ99

Actually you did many times, ergo your still a blatant liar. And you have no right to dictate the private lives of others. If you want to be celibate go join the heavens gate cult and do it alone.

          • fiona64

Only a person who is full of hate would make a comment like yours to someone they don’t know.

You mean, the way you did to the teenaged girl who wrote this column?

          • RonPaul2012

haha fiona makes a good point

why so mean to the teen girl who wrote the column?

you have done nothing but treat her with extreme disrespect and bigotry

          • expect_resistance

            Right on.

          • expect_resistance

The only hate-filled posts I see here are from you. You are a homophobic bigot as is the Catholic church. I am so glad I left the Catholic church years ago and don’t have to listen to that crap.

Do you realize the pain that hate brings? Do you have any idea what it’s like to be a gay teenager? Do you have any idea what it’s like for many LGBT people to be hated, ridiculed, and oppressed by people like you? Do you know anyone who is gay, bisexual, or transgender? I have a lot of LGBT friends and have watched the pain that they have had to endure from homophobia.

          • RonPaul2012

OH, she knows what it’s like to suffer. It’s just that she doesn’t care about anyone but her own smug morality.

          • CJ99

Indeed that bigot thinks “she” (more likely a guy) is being oppressed by the fact that the rest of us who refuse to worship “her” merely exist.

          • HeilMary1

Only a hateful idiot would ignore all the medical science on infants born intersexed (all of us to varying degrees!).

          • RonPaul2012

You are a liar. Because you claimed that gay marriage would destroy society, when there is nono proofproof that it will. And by claiming that pragnancy has never hurt women in the entire history of mankind.

          • CJ99

yeah you are both in spades and your still doing it. your also projecting your vicsious psychopathy on me in this isntance.

Get a clue nobody hear wants to know any more of you. I know you certainly not christlike in any way. For myself I’m not sure if I can reach “heaven” but this I am certain, that being I’m leaving you and your hateful diatribes far behind me. what you don’t see is you’ve got it deliberately ass backwards, what you so loudly proclaim as heaven is in fact hell which your trying to bring about right here on earth.

You’re only belief is “on earth as it is in hell”

          • L-dan

So…abomination is just a kind word for their sinful actions?

Why should gay people be refused the ability to marry because your go says so? You do realize that many of them are not Catholic, or even Christian, and therefore should not be held to your doctrines? You do realize that marriage in this country can contain both a civil and a religious component, of which only the former is addressed by laws making gay marriage legal?

          • AveMaria02

Abomination is a word for their sinful actions though I would not call it a kind word.

Gays should be refused the ability to “marry” because “gay marriage” will have a disastrous effect on society.

          • RonPaul2012

You still have NOT demonstrated how gay rights will destroy society.

            Put up or shut up.

            You are spouting baseless assertions.

          • HeilMary1

The only gays who have grievously harmed societies are closet clergy who promote hatred for all non-closet gays.

          • L-dan

You have yet to explain this disastrous effect. Several European countries have had legal gay marriage for a while now, as have many states. I have yet to hear of any real calamity occurring due to gay people getting married.

The increase in the world of thing *you* regard as sinful does not equal disaster for society.

          • RonPaul2012

Yet she is demanding citations from everyone else. Won’t back up her own bullshit.

          • L-dan

Somehow I think the catastrophic nature of societal collapse in those countries and states would have made the news. I mean, if they had, I suppose it *would* be self evident and he/she wouldn’t need citations.

Since everything seems to be humming along pretty much as normal, I do think he/she is the one in need of citations here.

I mean, what citations are needed for “other people’s marriages are not going to materially affect your life, no matter who they’re marrying?”

          • RonPaul2012

She is also demanding citations on the ‘texas life support’ thread

          • L-dan

            *has a look*

*rolls eyes so hard they dislocate*

That’s an impressive bubble they’re living in.

          • HeilMary1

Your “chaste” pedophile priests have bullied countless dictators to commit genocides throughout history, and any “straight” sex undiagnosed intersex you might have violates your own heresy rules. I’d trade my abusive “straight” parents for loving gay parents any day!

          • CJ99

Abomination is a person who uses the creator to justify their hatred of their fellow humans.

          • Ineedacoffee

            Please do tell, disastrous effect?
What the sky will fall in? Oceans turn to blood?
Straight people spit and sh*t on mariage everyday. Been to vegas? Prime example right there.
Ms Spears, Ms Kartrashian? they like totes do wonders for marriage

Be easier to abolish the ownership contact known as marriage. Thats what it was before christians stole and twisted it
I mean once upon a time marriage was only a way of joining riches and big powerful families. Daughters were sold off like objects

          • CJ99

Daughters are still sold off like objects under christianity and other religions. It’s still abusive the only change is its now dressed up in flowery but still revolting language.

But as is painfully obvious that perticular troll will never give proof or what “disasterous effect” will occur. The troll is fully aware that neither exists but is to arrogant to admit being wrong.

          • HeilMary1

Bigot, you are the abomination here with your medical ignorance of the 46 known intersex syndromes (that you have yourself!) and your heretic slavish adoration of PEDOPHILE PRIESTS!

          • CJ99

If you’ve ever had sex even once you’ve just damned yourself with your own judgemental bigotry.

        • HeilMary1

By your own anti-Christian ignorance-based prejudices, you should also be ashamed of all “straight” couples, since no one is born perfected male or female, thanks to natural prenatal chimerism and microchimerism. You yourself have opposite sex DNA debris in YOUR cells, you pompous idiot!

        • RonPaul2012

Which is why your hateful vile comments have been deleted by the mods right sweetie?

      • AveMaria02

Actually, I do follow Christ’s teachings. I follow every single one of His teachings as does the Catholic Church. The unfortunate thing is that there is not a single religion besides the Catholic Church which follows and obeys every single one of His teachings.

        • L-dan

          *laughs and laughs*

So that no fish on Fridays thing…that’s in there? You need some history lessons. Most of the teachings are the interpretations of centuries of powerful men, not direct from the Bible.

Contraception? Not in the bible. Abortion? In the bible as an actual positive…as in a law about giving a suspected adulteress an abortifacient mixture to see if it causes her to miscarry–which would prove the fetus to be the result of her adultery. Granted, that’s a really stupid sort of ‘proof’.

How about all that other stuff in Deuteronomy? The spot everyone quotes to say homosexuality is bad includes all those dietary and tribal laws that hardly anyone pays attention to now.

The Catholic church interprets the Bible to keep their clergy in power and to firmly enforce rigid gender roles to hold women as second class citizens. That you defend and support such an institution makes you an immoral human being, for nobody moral could continue supporting such an abusive bully as the church has proven itself to be.

          • CJ99

Let us not forget child abuse by preists, the inquistion, crusades and other religion induced crimes against humanity.

          • AveMaria02

The no fish on Friday thing is a discipline, not a doctrine. Also, not all of our doctrines come from the Bible. Some of them come from Sacred Tradition. If you knew anything at all about Catholicism, you would know that we do not consider the Bible to be the sole source of divine revelation.

          • CJ99

You don’t get to dictate devine revelation as you have no concept of what it is. You’re incapable of understanding others much less the creator. Do the world a favour & stop pretending to speak for him. those of us who really do desire to be around him are sickened by your flaming bigotry.

          • L-dan

And yet you can say the Catholic church is the only one that follows each and every one of Christ’s teachings. How about that one about those without sin casting stones?

Yes, I’m aware that the Catholic church considers all sorts of nonsense to be divine revelation. I’m also aware that its antique revelations cause real and lasting harm in the world, as does its abuse of power. I wouldn’t be so proud of the organization’s interpretations of Christ’s teachings were I Catholic.

I certainly don’t think you have a moral leg to stand on when you try to argue that Catholic teachings ought to somehow apply to anyone who isn’t Catholic.

          • CJ99

Catholic or not those hate filled “teachings” should apply to nobody.

          • HeilMary1

Your Nazi-colluding, mother-killing, child-raping death cult used to ban all marital sex most days of week as sacrilegious. It also claimed all birth defects were caused by sex on Sundays. It also briefly banned marriages between 6th cousins, but that property-looting swindle made it impossible for transportation-challenged serfs to marry anyone ever. You don’t know your own genocidal heresy cult’s real history, MOTHER KILLER.

        • CJ99

Jesus never said “thou shalt hate thy neighbour” nor would he say anything in that manner. Nor would he say blindly follow rich white men who molest children, wear ceremonial dresses & live in austentatious wealth while those around you live in desparate poverty.

Not only are you an arrogant ass your the antithesis of Jesus.

        • colleen2

Did you know that the last Magdalene laundry was closed in 1996?

          • Jennifer Starr

It’s pretty clear that Holly (aka Ave), has switched her brain to the ‘off’ position and she lets the ‘church’ do her thinking for her. If the ‘church’ says it’s all right, no matter what it is, it’s all right by her.

          • colleen2

So, what do you think they’re doing when they stroll on here proselytizing with insult and lies and sniffing their disapproval? Are they martyring themselves?. I suspect they are reveling in their victim-hood and martyrdom. “I only spoke of my gentle faith and those evil, cold women were so, so mean to me.” I’m pretty sure that meeting at the local clinic to scream at women and try to bully and intimidate them is what most of these folks have for a social life.

          • Jennifer Starr

            I think that’s it in a nutshell–it’s self-martyrdom.

          • colleen2

            damn…….

          • CJ99

Y’know you just gave an exact description of my parents & most of my relatives. All of them angry hate filled evangelicals. The only real difference is they spend every night & all weekend sitting in churchs whining how sad they are in their persucuted church cause “all the evil secular humanist goddless athiets are out to get them:” They really do see anyone who ignores their crap to be satanists.

      • HeilMary1

Ave is an anti-christ hater of all humanity since NO ONE is born perfectly male or female. In fact, if she/he has a spouse, I guarantee you that they would both fail medical gender purity testing, and so would their kids, thanks to fertilization anomalies guaranteed by the UNnatural Family Cramming “birth control” hoax pushed by her pedophile priests.

  • expect_resistance

Congrats to Illinois! It’s great that one more state has made same-sex marriage legal. MN passed same-sex marriage earlier this year and I was elated and proud to be a Minnesotan.
