Indiana Man Attacks Planned Parenthood With Ax Because of ‘Religious Beliefs’

A 27-year-old Indiana man is being held by police after taking an ax to a Bloomington, Indiana, Planned Parenthood clinic and then vandalizing it with red paint. The attack, which happened in the early hours of the morning, involved no staff or patients, as the office was closed.

According to the local ABC affiliate, Benjamin Curell said he damaged and vandalized the clinic because of his “religious beliefs.” Bloomington police Capt. Joe Qualters told the news organization, “The suspect made statements indicating the facility was targeted due to abortions being performed there … He stated his intent was to damage the building because they ‘kill’ and ‘murder’ babies. He attributed his actions to his religious beliefs.”

“We are of course working closely with local law enforcement regarding this incident, but no matter what the case, this individual will not deter us from continuing our mission to provide preventive care such as birth control, Pap tests, testicular and breast exams, and STD testing and treatment, in addition to abortion services, in Bloomington,” said Planned Parenthood of Indiana CEO Betty Cockrum in a statement. “While the center is only open for limited purposes today, it will again be fully up and running as soon as possible. We will protect our patients and our staff, and we will rise above, as we always do.”

Planned Parenthood of Indiana has been the focus of Indiana legislators the last few sessions; in 2011 then Gov. Mitch Daniels attempted to defund the group (the federal government blocked that attempt), and this year anti-choice legislators are trying to pass a targeted regulation of abortion provider (TRAP) law, SB 371, to block Planned Parenthood’s Lafayette clinic from offering medication abortions. Throughout the testimony for the bill, anti-choice state groups demonized the Planned Parenthood. Is it a big surprise that an anti-choice activist would eventually take action against one of the group’s clinics?

This is the problem with the ‘Christian Taliban’ leaders telling their empty-headed followers that “Religious Freedom” allows them to force their ideals onto others. Their rights end at the point where another person’s rights start.

Your Freedom of Religion does not cover the destruction of another’s life, livelihood or property. Funny how the GOP in politics have a very hard time understanding this.

Of course, the antis are just going to counter with “Well you’re freedom of . . . um, freedom doesn’t cover the destruction of another’s life!” You know, they freely admit that a woman’s life doesn’t belong to her anymore once sperm meets egg, but they’re loath to be as upfront about who now owns the woman’s body. The fetus, presumably, but I don’t think that’s really what they mean. I think what they just won’t quite admit is that a woman is just THIS shy of being public property when she’s not pregnant. We all know how she’s looked upon after she conceives.

Perhaps Planned parenthood should get registered as a church then they can use the old “religious liberty” card to deflect anyone who opposes their mission. Apparently claiming faith in one’s own personal superstitious believe system is justification to do anything one damned well pleases. On another a different note, this man sounds mentally ill and I’m curious as to why he left his guns at home.

    • luckymama6

Um, no it’s not an excuse, that’s why he got arrested. What a bizarre way to show your opposition! FYI, I know oodles of pro-lifers, and none are violent; in fact many have gone out of their way to help single moms. Your stereotypes are waaay overreaching.

      • http://twitter.com/JenGStarr Jennifer Starr

Sure–all those doctors being killed, clinics being firebombed–that must all be in my imagination. Then let’s talk about the activities that aren’t actually ‘violent’, but are still quite threatening and intimidating, like protests at someone’s home, posting their name and identifying information online, sending fliers to their neighbors, demonstrating in front of their churches and their children’s schools and you get a picture of ‘pro-life’ that’s quite different than the innocuous one you’re trying to paint.

      • http://twitter.com/JenGStarr Jennifer Starr

Even the current head of Operation Rescue is a terrorist who wanted to bomb clinics, though she’s supposedly renounced violence now.

      • goatini

Bullying, such as the stalking and harassment of patients attempting to obtain legal medical care, is emotional violence. Stop lying.

  • skip kippley

It is wonderful to note that management is able bounce back from the damage caused by this lunatic, and will immediately resume ripping innocent babies from the nurturing wombs of confused mothers.

    • http://twitter.com/JenGStarr Jennifer Starr

Yet another example of how ‘pro-lifers’ give tacit support and encouragement to terrorists like Mr. Currell.

    • Fed_Up18

Thank you for exemplifying the problem of ignorance & bigotry double-teaming women & religions-that-aren’t-yours.

    • goatini

No babies are involved, fetuses cannot be “innocent” because innocence requires sentience, and women become mothers after childbirth.

    • lynn smagacz

Gosh Skippy, do some research. Planned Parenthood offers sliding fee scale health care to women. They provide low cost meds for such problems as cysts or endometriosis. They provide counseling for battered women. They provide breast cancer screening and mammograms. They provide birth control at an affordable rate. Insurance covers Viagra so men can achieve erection. PP covers the result of all those insured penises. You sound silly.

      • HeilMary1

Yes, let’s ban elective Viagra for adulterous and pedophile men before banning basic reproductive health care for women!

      • skip kippley

Do some research? I don’t deny that they provide those services. Keep in mind that for every medically enhanced erection causing a pregnancy, there is also a woman choosing to spread her legs allowing that penis to enter her. I am pro-choice. Specifically, I am a proponent of men and women who behave responsibly with their genitals. You know…people who use an effective birth control method instead of aborting pregnancies and pretending that it is something as routine as getting a cavity filled.

        • goatini

Comment reported for “spread her legs”. Especially since it’s almost aways the males who are the sexual aggressors.

        • cjvg

So why are you not protesting and initiating laws that ban Viagra/Cialis, and ban federal funds being spend on erection enhancers/creators for Medicare recipients?

Why no religious exemptions for covering these completely frivolous medications and devices that have no health merit?

Pro-choice means that you believe it is not your place to make decisions about other peoples sex lives and health needs.

Obviously you are not pro-choice, you are pro-only-if-I-believe-your-sex life-is-acceptable-to-me-choice, commonly known as anti-choice!

Remember rick anti-abortion-in-all-cases santorum and his wife also had an abortion at 20 weeks.
But in “their” case it was called a medical miscarriage because he is anti-abortion except for those who deserve one like him and his wife.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

And MOST women who have had abortions do use some form of birth control. Poor skippy, did you just realize that the main contributors to abortion are Pro-‘Lifers’ because they, in the main, oppose comprehensive sex ed which would teach women how to use contraception MORE EFFECTIVELY???

          Aw, poor little hypocrite.

    • Carabosse

Shut up and go troll somewhere else. Leave the discussion to the grown ups.

    • ValerieWagner

You need a biology lessen. There are 500,000 to 900,000 babes lost to spontaneous abortion, millions of sperm killed on their journey, there are stages of growth with no nervous system, let alone a brain. What about babes born with horrible deformities because ill informed people like you. The cost to government for the care of children the churches certainly are NOT taking care of. I think “God” and people like you have a lot to answer for.

    • HeilMary1

You just want all women grossly maimed and/or murdered by fetuses on behalf of pedophile priests.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000102017921 Eric Phipps

The stupid is strong with this one. But it is nice to see that the crew of that PP are still carrying out their duties and looking after their patients. Anybody know the address of the crazy guy? We could send him pamphlets or science books or something.

    • cjvg

Because women are so stupid that they can’t figure out what being pregnant means?!
You are very very much mistaken, they know what it means and that is why they are there!
Women do not need your paternalistic approval or “counseling” to know what they want

  • cjvg

Maybe it is time that the churches these freaks go to are held responsible in a court of law!
Money talks, if it is going to start costing them their real god.

  • Fed_Up18

And what if my religious beliefs say I get to skill people trying to suppress my religion…?

  • http://twitter.com/dorkulon heathenish

    If only he’d had a gun…

    • http://twitter.com/dorkulon heathenish

That was a joke about gun nuts, just so any federal agents who may be monitoring this discussion understand.

I like Benjamin Curell. At least he tried to save the children from
    being murdered at Planned Parenthood.
Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto
them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least
of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

    • http://twitter.com/JenGStarr Jennifer Starr

Yes, we all know about your love for terrorists, Donny. I’m betting you kiss a picture of Osama Bin Laden on a daily basis.

    • cjvg

Save the children, kill a woman or any other human who believes women are people too.

    • squirrely_girl

He didn’t try to “save” anything or anybody. The coward vandalized an empty building in the wee hours of the morning and then ran and hid.

    • goatini

I’m into saving the children that a woman will have someday when she chooses to do so of her own free will. And saving those children, and the woman’s dignity and integrity, sometimes requires safe, legal termination of an unwanted pregnancy at a time when the woman does not want to start or grow her family. We are people, we are human, we are not livestock.

    • ohiolibrarian

Try reading the WHOLE verse sometime. It refers to helping the poor, the sick and imprisoned. Funny how so many calling themselves “pro-life” don’t want to do any of that. You old goat.
