Regarding public hair removal: I’ve personally been repulsed by the idea ever since I was a grad student and was copywriting a book for the APA in which the author laid out a pretty convincing argument that the practices of body hair removal in both men and women stems from the desire to present our bodies in a faux pre-pubescent state and thus reducing sources of social tension and conflict that arise from sexual competition among fully mature adults. Or as my brain translated it: we want our sexually mature bodies to not look (or smell) sexually mature, i.e., like kid’s bodies. Ick. Ick. Ick. While I do conform to certain practices for personal hygiene and to not freak people out cos I’m a brunette and my leg hair is quite visible, pubic hair removal makes me think I’m trying to make my fully mature womanly pubic area look like a 10 year girl’s, and frankly, I’d rather not.

But more on topic: while indeed causation has not been proven, as the study merely indicates an association, it wold not surprise me if pubic hair does perform some function like this, not unlike our eyelashes and nasal hair, in obstructing unwanted micro-nasties from reaching vulnerable areas.

It intrigues me to know whether the author of the book was a male or female? As a female and an someone who has been waxing for 15 + years I must say that, in my case, it has more to do with hygiene than to present my body in a pre-pubescent state. You know, I bleed every month and it makes me feel cleaner without the hair in the midst of it. But hey, it’s just my preference. However, your present a very good argument!

I think that is great! I have done many things over the years for fun and pleasure, however, my concern is that there seems to be a new idea that we are “supposed” to be that way, and if we aren’t we are “gross”. Regarding the previous comment that pubic hair serves a function, yes, evolution hasn’t yet caught up to porn and the ideal American woman.

So, my husband had a bad head injury and people kept asking why they didn’t shave his head. I was told by the doctors that the act of shaving or removing hair in areas that normally have it opens up the patient to additional risk of infection and they just don’t do it by default like they used to.
I am concerned with the new “ideal” that mature humans shouldn’t have pubic hair, I mean what is that all about? At the same time we are trying to eradicate some indicators of sexual maturity we are also trying to exaggerate others (e.g. artificially large breasts), the worst part is none of this can be done without surgical and other medical procedures. I am glad I don’t have to be 20 in this day and age.
