Arizona Federal District Court Blocks Efforts to Defund Planned Parenthood

See our coverage of the Arizona funding battle here.

A federal district court in Arizona made it official this week and entered a permanent injunction that blocks a law designed to strip Planned Parenthood clinics in the state of funds by banning Medicaid funding for non-abortion health care provided by doctors and clinics that also perform abortions. Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Cecile Richards praised the victory in a statement: “Yet another court has said it is unacceptable for politicians to dictate where women can go for their health care, returning to women the ability to choose the health centers they trust for lifesaving cancer screenings, breast health exams, and birth control. Politicians in Arizona and across the country should recognize that they have no business inserting themselves in a woman’s personal health care decisions.”

“This case has never been about Planned Parenthood—it is about the women who rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for quality, affordable preventive care. Eliminating Planned Parenthood as an option among providers only hurts women and families,” she added.

The injunction guarantees that women in the state will continue to have access to lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, and STI screenings at Planned Parenthood clinics across the state, despite conservative lawmakers’ efforts in the state to cut off that access. It’s an important victory that comes on the heels of a similar victory in Indiana. Meanwhile, fights over Planned Parenthood funding continue in North Carolina, Kansas, and Tennessee.

This is unfortunate. Planned Parenthood is nothing but a group of murderers, they’re not planning families, they are killing them. They need to be de-funded to save the lives of babies!

    • Brandi Owens

      Shut up, Donna.

      • Donna Miller

Awww are you butt hurt because the truth hurts?

        • HeilMary1

“Donna” is an angry pedophile priest.

        • Dezzydez

Naw you are a liar and a forced birther that does not trust women and want to control our reproduction using the law.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

No, she’s angry because morons like you will never give yourselves the chance to see the truth. Unfortunately.

    • missdk

Sorry. Statistics prove otherwise. Access to birth control and sexual education = less abortions.

      • Donna Miller

Sex education = promiscuity = STDs

        Planned Parenthood = baby murder

        • missdk

Obvious troll is obvious. Glad you’re enjoying yourself over women’s lives.

        • HeilMary1

No sex ed = DEAD mothers, STDs, abusive husbands, divorces, high unemployment, and pedophile priests who traffic unplanned orphans

Planned Parenthood = SAVED mothers, SAVED jobs, livid forced-abstinent pedophile priests

        • Dezzydez

Wrong. Women-hating people like you contribute to more unwanted pregnancies and STIs. With education it has been proven that less women get pregnant and less people have STI. Facts say you are full of shit.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

Stats please. And most women who have abortions used some form of contraception. Gee, whodathunkit? What you REALLY mean is that abstinence-only sex ed promotes promiscuity without contraception which equals STD’s, right? Which leads to more abortions? Which means that Pro-Lifers = more ‘baby murders’, right?

Despite the fact that abortion is not murder (it’s neither illegal, not killing, not done with malice, nor do women get pregnant to have an abortion), NOR are babies involved. SFS.

    • philip

Planned parenthood should stop abortions and start letting people adopt the children..or at least provide birth control that works.

      • http://twitter.com/JenGStarr Jennifer Starr

Adoption is a solution to unwanted parenthood–it does nothing about an unwanted pregnancy. And a woman is not obligated to carry a pregnancy in order to provide an infertile couple with a child.

Otherwise we would be nothing but incubators, with no emotions, no rights. I just wonder why the Republicans are so confused about why women do not vote for them? Does it not boggle the mind? Oh, well, we won one, but there will always be a next one as long as there are right wing zealots to carry on.

          • Donna Miller

How about this…if you don’t want to get pregnant, don’t have sex! It’s not rocket science here. However, if you do get pregnant, don’t be expecting other people to pay for you to kill it.

          • HeilMary1

So you want married couples to stop having sex? Obviously, you also oppose contraception and sterilization, and have never had non-procreative sex. And you’re OK with spending billions on raising millions of unwanted kids. And how many have YOU adopted??

          • Dezzydez

You do not pay for shit dumbass. You people always use that stupid meme. In the same token why should I have to pay for your snot nosed children?

          • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

Doesn’t work for men, moron. They can have sex and still not get pregnant. Do you SEE why we call you misogynists, now? Also, as Ella indicated, abstinence is the least effective form of contraception out there. It’s perfect use rate compared to actual practice has a MUCH larger gap than all other forms of contraception. Whoops.

      • http://www.facebook.com/ella.warnock.7 Ella Warnock

Birth control does work. And the fact that I have something someone else wants (a baby) doesn’t mean that they’re entitled to have it.

        • Donna Miller

There is no 100% accurate form of birth control except abstinence.

          • HeilMary1

Liar, sterilization and the pill have nearly 100% effectiveness. You just hate sex and want everyone to be as psychotically miserable and lonely as you.

          • http://www.facebook.com/ella.warnock.7 Ella Warnock

Abstinence is not 100% accurate, either. Obviously. The human part of the equation is exactly what makes it so unreliable. And when it inevitably fails, there you are with an unwanted pregnancy. Hormonal birth control worked VERY well for me until I was able to obtain a tubal ligation.

      • Donna Miller

Unfortunately, the only 100% effective method of birth control is abstinence, and Planned Parenthood doesn’t make money when people aren’t promiscuous.

        • HeilMary1

Without Planned Parenthood, the child-raping Vatican wouldn’t make any money by pimping the forced-birth billions of poor for charity donations. Without Planned Parenthood, priests and GOP adulterers would still be promiscuous, but with higher piles of DEAD mothers to brag about.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ella.warnock.7 Ella Warnock

Honestly, I don’t care. Obviously, I’m not going to be abstinent within my marriage. Unless you’re catholic, that’s an asinine proposal. I never worried about possible fertilization that didn’t implant when I was not taking birth control. Why would I worry about the possibility when I was taking it? The whole point was to not have a kid, and I didn’t. Success, as they say.
Anti hormonal birth control people are overdramatizing the “failure to implant” angle. Most women don’t care, just as long as they don’t end up with an unwanted kid.

          • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

Also, there are other methods by which failure to implant is much more common. These people are just anti-sex without consequences for women. Idiots.

        • Dezzydez

Abstinence is not realistic. PP prevents more abortions than forced birthers like you have prevented.

      • HeilMary1

        It does provide effective contraception.

      • Dezzydez

PP should support women on what they want to do with their bodies and not what you want for them. Simply our medical issues are none of your damn business unless you want us in your private life.

      • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

They provide the same birth control that every other health care provider does. It’s people like YOU that prevent women from receiving comprehensive sex ed to teach them how to use it more effectively. Great, oppose comprehensive sex ed then wonder why women have more abortions. How stupid do you have to be? After all, NO birth control is 100 percent effective. Kthxbai.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1151873021 Jackie Wilson

Donna, are you really a white male, masquerading as a female?

      • Donna Miller

Because I believe every child deserves a life that makes me a male? Sorry sir, but not every female kills their young.

        • HeilMary1

Correction: you believe every zygote has a duty to maim and murder its hostage host.

        • Dezzydez

No you are an immoral forced birther that does not care that women get safe abortions. You would rather women die from back alley abortions than get it safely in clinics.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

More females kill their young, than don’t. But abortion is not about killing. Seriously, understand what you’re talking about before commenting on posts, antis. It’s about TERMINATING A PREGNANCY. Fetuses aren’t children. Do you believe every rapist deserves a life? If not, hypocrite.

      • HeilMary1

        You beat me to it!

    • Dezzydez

Dumbass!! Why do you hate women so much that you do not trust us to make our own choices? Can you not comprehend that your opinion should not be forced on others?

    • http://www.facebook.com/Feral.9.Hex Carla Clark

Pro-Lifers kill women by forcing them to go through the second leading cause of death for women, worldwide. Therefore, their CPCs must be defunded in order to save the lives of women and prevent them from killing families.

Abortion is not murder. And abortions are only three percent of PP’s services. Kthxbainow.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tanya.yazzie Tanya Yazzie

This is great news. Now people won’t think that all of Arizona is full of jerks. It’s not like they pay for abortions, although that would be even better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Major-Waisbrot/1417272292 Mary Major-Waisbrot

It’s about time health care stopped being held hostage by zealots.

  • Vashti

Do you think conservatives are simply confused by the recipients of the Margaret Sanger awards? If perhaps a few of them went to prestigious doctors and politicians making advancements in women’s health care they’d be more receptive to them? The 2012 awardees must be difficult for them to see it as anything but abortion. I wonder who paid for the ceremony and why do we never hear about it?
