They Are Coming for Your Birth Control: “Abstinence Never Fails to Prevent Pregnancy”

Note: Think that anti-choice politicians and activists aren’t trying to outlaw contraception?  Think again.  Follow along in an ongoing series that proves beyond a doubt that they really are coming for your birth control.

Mary Turner of Wisconsin is pretty sure she has a flawless reason that everyone who doesn’t want to be pregnant should just stop having sex—birth control failure. Oh, and “relationship failure.” She must be right, she claims, since both the Pope and Planned Parenthood are on her side.

Via the Lacrosse Tribune:

As for contraception and the Vatican, again the Alan Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s research arm, has repeatedly reported that women seek abortion due to contraception failure.

Abstinence never fails to prevent pregnancy. Contraception can and does.

Turner is the former president of Life Voice, an anti-choice Wisconsin-esque anti-birth control group that vowed to “Tell the Truth With Charity About Contraception.” Allied with Pro-Life Action League, the organization that is responsible for a vast portion of the anti-choice presence outside of reproductive health clinics, the now defunct organization considered birth control, “the cause of so much chaos in the world today and the root of the abortion culture and the culture of death.” In 2006, she rallied with other anti-contraception groups eager to come up with an action plan to rid the country of the scourge that is birth control, seeing it as the next frontier to fight to eliminate. She told the Chicago Tribune:

“It’s new to some aspects of the pro-life world, and it’s old news in other parts of the pro-life world. It’s just beginning to be embraced more fully by the whole pro-life world,” said Mary Turner, 42, of La Crosse, Wis., one of about 180 people who attended Friday night’s opening of the two-day conference, called “Contraception is Not the Answer.”

That possibility alarms abortion-rights advocates, who warn that birth control, taken for granted by millions of women, could become a new battleground.

Turner may not be with Life Voice now, but luckily she still has a forum in newspapers sending letters to the editor to explain why she, and other anti-choice zealots, are coming for your birth control.

Abstinence never fails to prevent pregnancy.

Of course it does.  Abstinence is a woman *voluntarily* abstaining from sex and when the men around that woman don’t cooperate, rape results in pregnancy in an estimated 5% of cases.

My mom’s decades of abstinence-only outsourced my dad to hot-looking, half-age hookers!   These pompous sex-haters really amaze me in that they refuse to see how banning all contraception for everyone means ruining their own marriages with the extremes of either no sex for decades or bankrupting unwanted litters of starving kids.  They also ignore all the pretend-celibate clergy who rape kids and nuns.  Pedophile priests probably started the false rumor that contraception “doesn’t work”.  Maybe contraception manufacturers should sue the RCC and its sock puppet misogynists for libel, fraud and Munchausen By Proxy abuse of women.  Mary Turner and her ilk should be sued for pushing pro-pedophile priest medical fraud.

    From the Chicago Tribune link:

“One of the speakers at this weekend’s conference, Rev. Thomas Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, is very clear about the political components of the anti-contraception agenda: ‘Take away all funding from Planned Parenthood for contraception and sex-education programs,’ he said.

    `Chemical attack’

Euteneuer believes a single argument holds the greatest potential for changing how the anti-abortion community thinks about birth control.

‘Chemical contraception doesn’t prevent abortions, it causes abortion,’ he said in an interview. ‘If we believe life begins at the moment of conception, we have to defend it against [this] chemical attack.’ “

Please note that this event occurred 4 years ago and that IRrevend Euteneuer has since been fired by HLI for molesting women he conducted “exorcisms” on.  So Crowepps, you are correctamundo in linking abstinence to rape!  Thank you!

“Abstinence makes the heart grow fondlers!”

Whoever coined that truth deserves a White House job!

  • thalwen

Even without rape, abstinence has a terrible track record, even in the good ol’ times when men were men and women were property, people still got it on. These asshats also oppose teaching masturbation as a means to stay abstinent which would make abstinence more feasible (I suppose that’s part of the ‘abortion mindset’). We are sexual beings, telling people to just say “no” doesn’t work for drugs and alcohol and it is really useless against a biological drive.

and was never anything but kind and loving.

  • give-em-hell-mary

And I know many Catholic women who were brutal to their unwanted children.

  • colleen

and yet your mother raised a Republican troll.

  • colleen

Of course the greatest proponents of abstinence never hold men responsible for anything and   can’t even manage to prevent themselves from emotionally, physically and sexually molesting small children.

  • ljean8080

    ust like Jerry Castillo.

I suspect you mean Jerry Costello, but voting or having voted for one Democrat does not make you one. If you are a Democrat, why does most everything out of your mouth sound like it came directly from Fox News?  You spend most of your time on here parroting right-wing talking points and then you expect us to believe you’re a Democrat? Please.

  • jennifer-starr

Yay for you–you were wanted. Doesn’t mean that every child was.

  • crowepps

Why are you so insistent that what happened to you must be typical, and therefore the information shared by other people here must be lies or exaggerations?  If your mother was Catholic and kind and loving, if you were ‘wanted’, then you actually don’t have any information to share about the experience of children who were unwanted, or who were abused.  It’s like you have your eyes and ears covered, while you insist everybody else is really Just Like You.  Or at least *should* be Just Like You.

  • give-em-hell-mary

I think she wants us abuse survivors to keep quiet about raucous white Catholic GOP perps and go after her quiet, law-abiding brown-skinned neighbors who “invade” her ever-expanding comfort zone.
