The Call: A Choice No Mother Should Face

VIDEO: The Call: A Choice No Mother Should Face

Sonia has worked so hard for this: a healthy family and a normal life in an average American town. But on a night that should have been like any other, she is forced to make an impossible choice that could shatter her family’s dreams forever. We must protect the rights of immigrant women, and of all immigrants to the US.

Today, Breakthrough, a global human rights organization, released a short film, “The Call,” that tells the story of millions of immigrant women forced by inhumane U.S. immigration policy to choose between keeping their children safe today and keeping their families together for good. As the rights of women are increasingly under attack in the continuing “war on women,” an entire population deeply affected by this conversation continues to be largely ignored: immigrant women.

The film, which is inspired by the stories of real-life undocumented immigrant women encountered by Breakthrough, shows the emotional struggles of an immigrant family as they grapple with the choice between seeking medical care when their daughter is violently attacked and the risk that doing so could trigger the mother’s deportation—and tear the family apart. The mother and daughter in the film are played by real-life mother and daughter Zuleyma Guevara (Sonia) and Yadira Guevara (Teresa).

“As anyone who watches the film can see, cruel immigration policies rip families apart and force immigrant women to hide in the shadows,” said Breakthrough president and CEO Mallika Dutt, who also wrote this important article on the subject for RH Reality Check this past April.

These women share our values of family, community and country. They contribute to our economy by creating jobs and growing new businesses. But we continue to deny their basic human rights. It’s time that we all stand up for these women — our neighbors and friends, our mothers and sisters. Please share this film to say #ImHere for the rights of immigrant women.

Federal immigration policies and state laws such as Arizona’s harsh SB 1070 are creating human rights crises in communities around the country. These laws legitimize racism, racial profiling, and the scapegoating of immigrants. They enforce cruel conditions that needlessly separate mothers from their children and restrict access to basic health care and education.

In the first six months of 2011, the U. S. deported more than 46,000 persons whose children are United States citizens. Currently there are 5,100 U.S. children living in foster care who are unable to reunite with their detained or deported families.

The broken immigration system also forces women to choose between the threat of an abusive partner and the threat of deportation if they call the police. A critical mass of #ImHere change agents, acting as one voice, can compel the presidential candidates to publicly acknowledge the abuses faced by immigrant women.

how about NOT COMING HERE ILLEGALY?

  • give-em-hell-mary

How about you not electing anti-choice theothugs to our Congress who then deny them through foreign aid, treaties and CIA coups all family planning access in their own overpopulated Catholic poverty pits?  Those women come here to escape the desperate poverty and incubating slavery you helped impose on them!  Blame only anti-choice voters like yourself when your forced-birth foreign chickens come to your home to roost, because your GOP stole or poisoned their feed.  What sickening hypocrisy!

  • ljean8080

    NT.

  • crowepps

Seems to me that punishing them for not being legal immigrants by taking their children away, putting them in foster homes, making their children available for adoption, and then transferring parenthood so that the mothers lose contact with their children permanently is pretty excessive punishment.  It is in particular excessive punishment for the children, who lose the parents they love when they aren’t guilty of anything at all.

  • arekushieru

So are we.  Where’s our punishment?  AND we weren’t running from repressive governments, like the majority of them were.  WHOOPS.

And, like Mary said, anti-choicers like you helped CREATE that environment.  Punishing others for your crimes is acceptable, now?

  • give-em-hell-mary

Thank you!  The entitled descendants of the illegal European invaders of this Turtle Island (North America) don’t like to think of themselves as illegal aliens because they speak the imposed official language of the English invaders.  If Spain dominated the North invasions and won the territorial wars, Spanish would be our official language today.  It’s ironic that Spain’s domination of Central and South America is now surging across our southern borders, but I blame our elected pro-slave labor, pro-incubating slavery Vatican puppet GOP politicians like Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey for keeping sex dangerous and impoverishing for our southern neighbors.  Smith’s “pro-life” cult defends pedophile priests, genocidal dictators, arresting miscarriage patients for “infanticide”, and outsourcing North and South American jobs to overpopulated “one-child” China, and then he gets egregiously re-elected every two years by one-issue fetal fascist voters who fume over dictator-persecuted jobless families who can’t wait years for the proper bureaucratic red tape papers to flee here!  If ljean8080 had any common sense, she’d support politicians who support international family planning which reduces border refugee chaos and job outsourcing to forced-birth slave labor countries.  Family planning is a win-win for everyone except pedophile priests, dictators, sweatshop CEOs, and arms manufacturers.

why don’t you guys talk to the couple in my state whoose 5 kids were killed by an illegal who got a truck driving license when he did not how to drive a truck.he is going to be in priison for 20 years

Because no US Citizen has ever crashed a truck in the history of the US, right?  * snort*

  • ljean8080

    drive ILLEGALY.

  • ljean8080

    how to drive a truck.

  • give-em-hell-mary

You’re missing the point!  Suppose those 5 kids had instead been killed by a born-here, English-speaking, white anti-choice activist distracted by his anti-choice antics?  Would you demand banning anti-choicers from driving anti-choice protest-festooned vehicles?  Somehow I don’t think so!  You just don’t like brown-skinned, non-English speaking overpopulation refugees coming here to roost as a reminder of your short-sighted selfish foreign policies.  And your own English isn’t all that great!

  • give-em-hell-mary

    I don’t believe you’re a Democrat.

  • jennifer-starr

And if this had just been some white, American born truck driver who happened to fall asleep at the wheel (one in every five truck crashes)  and  crash into a vehicle what would you say then?  Mary is right–you missed my point COMPLETELY.

  • ljean8080

has to take classes and pass a test.should he not be in prison?

  • jennifer-starr

And you’re still missing the point. The point is, that your driver who killed five people could just as easily have been some white American truck driver born and raised in someplace like  Macon County, Georgia. I had a friend who was killed by a white, American-Born truck driver when she was coming home for Thanksgiving over ten years ago–he fell asleep for one minute, veered into their lane and crashed head on into her car.

So unless you can prove that the majority of truck drivers who crash trucks are iillegal immigrants, the fact that your driver was illegal is irrelevant. Do we understand one another  now?

but in all fairness he/she does a great job of derailing conversations with one sentence, mind numbingly stupid Faux news talking points. Even he/she knows this conversation has nothing to do with illegal immigration and yet look how effectively she has destroyed any possibility of interesting conversation on the actual topic with one poorly spelled sentence fragment and an obnoxious personality. it’s genius
