After Missouri Rep. Todd Akin made his calloused and scientifically untrue remarks about rape victims, conservative politicians and action groups quickly divided over whether or not the Republican congressman should leave the senate race. Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-choice political action organization, urged him to continue, saying, “Todd Akin, on the other hand, has a record of voting to protect human life. His opponent does not.  Congressman Akin has been an excellent partner in the fight for the unborn.”

Yet despite their public support, the group is dropping some serious cash in political ads in Missouri… ads opposing President Barack Obama, not Akin’s rival, Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill.

The SBA List describes the commercial as part of a campaign aimed at “Obama’s extremist record on abortion.” In a statement, SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser branded the president as outside the social mainstream.

His views, she said, “fly in the face of mainstream American views and run counter to the President’s first term pre-election talk of finding common ground. Recent polling reveals the majority of Americans support bans on these horrific practices.”

Thanks to the SBA List, Democrats won’t be the only ones trying to gain the initiative in Missouri, where the presidential race isn’t competitive but the debate over abortion is likely at its national peak.

It’s interesting that Politico notes the presidential race isn’t competitive, yet SBA List is spending money on that, rather than on the senate race which, prior to Akin’s remarks, actually was. The group may have encouraged Akin not to succumb to pressure and drop out of the race, but they don’t appear to be ready to offer their own financial support.
