Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has taken a lot of hits from all sides regarding his position on abortion, mainly because it seems to change every day. But according to the GOP nominee, he’s been perfectly clear all along what is views are — it’s the public who’s not paying attention.

“My position has been clear throughout this campaign,” Romney said. “I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.”

Romney, however, told [anchor Scott] Pelley that the issue amounts to a distraction.

“Recognize this is the decision that will be made by the Supreme Court,” he said. “The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts. It’s been settled for some time in the courts.”

Actually, though, this has *not* been Romney’s position, at not until after Todd Akin made his ill-timed statement. And the question that both CBS’s Scott Pelley and other reorters failed to ask Romney is whether, given his promise to sign a human life amendment, he would do so.

Moreover, the issue is not really “settled” in the courts. As we’ve seen in the last two years as hundreds of laws restricting abortion rights have passed in the states, some to go into effect, others to be blocked, appealed, and continue on in the process all the way up the judicial latter, the law is nowhere near settled. 

Perhaps that does make it the perfect metaphor for Romney’s own views.
