Brewer Signs “Abortion-Services” Bill At Susan B. Anthony List Reception

I hope she at least got a good photo op out of the deal.

Many politicians have been known to use theatrics when signing anti-choice bills, by, say, inviting local anti-choice advocates, religious leaders, and the like into the office for the event, or even signing a bill at a church.

So it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that when Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed yet another piece of legislation intended to cut off any support to Planned Parenthood, she took her bill to a Susan B. Anthony List reception to sign it there.

The Arizona Abortion Services Bill will bar any group that provides abortions from receiving any sort of public money, regardless of its intended use. And the location that Brewer chose — a “women’s” political group dedicated to cutting off any funding to Planned Parenthood or any of its affiliates, was not lost on observers.

Via the Arizona Republic:

“I think it’s also instructive that the place that the governor would sign this is at a political rally — it might be an elegant political rally, but it is a 100 percent political event, and that speaks volumes about what this legislation was about from day one,” said Bryan Howard, president of Planned Parenthood of Arizona. “But while the impetus for the governor is political, and for the sponsors it’s political, the impact is on health care for poor Arizonans, and that is a terrible, terrible trade-off.”

First they endorse anti-choice male Republicans to run against anti-choice female Democrats, now they are fighting to eliminate one of the largest providers of contraception to low-income and uninsured women? Somehow, I don’t think this is what Susan B. Anthony had in mind.
