Pennsylvania TRAP Law Continues Through Legislature
Using the Kermit Gosnell incident as its impetus, the state seeks to add regulations to clinics that will likely shut most, if not all of them, down.
The state of Pennsylvania continues to fight against access to safe, legal abortion, as two onerous abortion restriction laws work their way through the legislature.

One bill, a response to the deaths of eight women’s deaths at former Philadelphia clinic, would require clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers. The other bill would bar abortion coverage in health plans sold through the insurance exchanges required in 2014 by the national health care law.
Sari Stevenson, director of PA Planned Parenthood, says no medical organizations support the bills and they appear to be an attempt by abortion foes to shut down the state’s 20 clinics.
The state continues to use the horror of what happened at the clinic run by Kermit Gosnell as its reasoning behind wanting to regulate the rest of the state’s clinics. But Gosnell’s clinic existed as it did primarily because it served women who had no other access to abortions and who were too desperate to turn him in.
TRAP laws that force more legal, safe clinics to close will simply create more places like Gosnell’s in the future.
