Abortion “Regretter” Fakes A Letter

Guess you can't believe everything you read in the paper.

With the 40 Days for Life campaign once more upon the country, the number of anti-choice letters to the editor seems to be surging.  But are all of the “I reget my abortion” announcements true?

Apparently not.

The Concord Monitor verifies one letter that just didn’t seem right, only to get hung up on in the process.

For starters, the name on the letter didn’t match the name in the email address. And the name on the voicemail when I called to verify the writer’s identity didn’t match the name on the letter. Turns out, I’d received letters from that same email account in years past – and the name and town didn’t match those included in the new letter.

When I connected with the writer on the phone, she told me that she had a legal name and a name more familiar to friends and family. But the “familiar” name from the letter was not the one on her voicemail. Nor did it match the name she had apparently used in previous letters to the editor.

My hunch: Perhaps the writer had, in fact, had an abortion she regretted but didn’t want to reveal her true identity. Or perhaps both her name and her story were false.

On the bright side, at least it was actually a woman.  On the internet, you never know…
