Michigan Banning “Partial Birth” Abortions

The ban has passd the State Senate and is expected to pass the House.

The federal government already has a so-called “Partial Birth Abortion” ban, but for the Republicans of Michigan, that apparently isn’t good enough.  So the state’s anti-choice legislators have decided to create and pass a ban of their own.

And, to be especially thorough, they’ve eliminated almost all exceptions.

Via Detroit News:

Democrats opposed the ban saying it is not necessary since the federal government banned the practice in 2003. They unsuccessfully proposed amendments to provide exceptions in the case of rape, or possible damage to a woman’s health.

“(The ban) contains no exception for a woman’s health,” said Sen. Glenn Anderson, D-Westland. “It sends a message that the state of Michigan believes politicians, not doctors, know what is best for the health of a woman.”

Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, asked Republicans to vote against the amendments.

“There are provisions in the bill to protect the life of the mother,” Meekhof said of the amendment to add a health exception. “This amendment is not necessary.”

This is not the first time the state has tried to pass this ban, but each prior time the courts have rejected it as unconstitutional.
