The Kansas legislature has passed a bill meant to defund Planned Parenthood by removing $334,000 in Title X funding meant to help low income women access reproductive health screenings and birth control. The measure, as well as a full ban on any abortion coverage in any insurance policies in the state, continue to establish Kansas as one of the most anti-women’s health states in the country.
Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri responded to the attack on women with this statement, via The Hill:
“It is outrageous that Gov. [Sam] Brownback will sign a budget bill that will undermine women’s health and deny Planned Parenthood from providing preventive health care through the Title X program,” President and CEO Peter Brownlie said in a statement. “Thousands of Kansans are now at risk of losing access to basic, preventive health care.”
What will happen to the $300,000 plus dollars that will no longer go to women’s health care? The state said that it will be going to other full-service health care clinics in the state, although some note that many areas in Kansas do not have other clinics for the poor to access.
Also according to Lifenews, $300,000 will be going into the Stan Clark state matching fund program for “pregnancy support and adoption counseling.” The funds will go to various Catholic Charities across the state.
Contact Gov. Sam Brownback and tell him that removing money from Planned Parenthood only hurts poor women and causes more unwanted pregnancies. Tell him to veto the bill.
