Boots on the Ground: Defending Planned Parenthood

Anti-choice believers co-opting the language of feminist work is nothing new. But today’s noontime anti-choice protest of Planned Parenthoods across the country, orchestrated by David Bereit and 40 Days for Life, takes it to a whole new level.

Live Action and 40DFL have spent the last few weeks whipping their mailing lists into a froth over a topic that anti-cthoicers barely registered until this campaign — sex trafficking of girls. Do they want to make sure trafficked women are cared for, that have legal options and full human rights, that they have access to safe health care provided by organizations with decades of experience on the front lines of victims’ advocacy?

Not quite. 40DFL is instead urging its followers to protest Planned Parenthood for daring to give clear, complete, legally-accurate advice without judgment, and follow legal reporting procedures with sting videographers from Live Action.

This is not the time to cast judgment on most of the anti-choice followers who will show up to scream at Planned Parenthood today. It is time instead to understand that they believe the simple line in the face of a complex reality. Feminist writers, advocates, activists, and organizations like Planned Parenthood have spent decades working day to day with the not-so-simple realities of women’s lives. We know the world is not fair or just; that the judicial bypass law and parental notification law were not written to be safe for girls; that families aren’t always in communication; that sometimes safety is hard to come by.

It’s time to put boots to the ground in defense of Planned Parenthood’s safe, compassionate, complete sexual health care, education, and advocacy for men, women, and families across our country. Call, email, and write to representatives every single time you burn with outrage. (For me, that’s daily. YES, every day.) Visit your local reps. Talk to your family. Come out as pro-choice. Because pro-choice IS pro-life.

Great article! It IS time to defend PP and reproductive freedom! I would add write letters to the editor of your local paper. Write about being pro-choice on your blog, website, twitter, etc.

  • lifereality

May I suggest another option: go visit one or stand outside one for awhile and see how hurt the women are who are leaving after an abortion.

    http://www.silentnomoreawareness.org/testimonies/

  • ahunt

Yah….never mind that the vast majority of the one third of American women who have chosen abortion think and feel that they made the right decision.

Move along. Nothing to see here.

  • ldan

Talk about missing the point. A tiny percentage of PP’s work is abortion. How hurt are the women (and men) served by PP going to be when it’s harder to find a local, inexpensive source of basic health screenings, contraception, and nonjudgmental education?

You can find plenty of testimony from women who don’t regret their abortions, testimony from women traumatized more by protestors than by their abortion, testimony from women who regretted having children, and so on, and so forth. Do you have a point to make by highlighting only one sort of testimony? Or are you instead perpetuating the ‘simple line in the face of a complex reality’ that the author talks about?

  • beenthere72

Come to think of it, I was a little hurt when I left.   Quite crampy.

I will continue to stand outside PP’s abortion mills and demonstrate against the mass killings they continue to do daily.

Well, we all do what we feel we must.

Most of these are in low income minority neighborhoods because they target blacks and latinos.

    Kool-Aid

Their founder began targeting blacks and they continue to do so today. Those who champion abortion will deny Sangers history because it shows the organization in a bad light…but nothing can change the truth of history past.

    Kool-Aid laced with Moonshine.

Abortion makes PP billions of dollars……they make money on dead babies.

Kool-Aid into which LSD has been introduced.

You say they want the best for women……yet they work against showing the woman an ultrasound of the baby the woman wants to kill. They have been exposed for selling fetal body parts and for not reporting underaged girls who get abortions in their clinics.

    IV  LSD Kool-Aid

If a woman is more traumatized by protesters then she deserves what she gets. Because she is the one who killed her baby…….not those that stand outside and pray that she would change her decision. Where is PP for the millions of women who regret their abortions. I will tell you where they are……..COLLECTING MONEY FOR THE NEXT ONE.

    And back to plain Kool-Aid.

I will continue to stand outside PP’s abortion mills and demonstrate against the mass killings they continue to do daily.

Ehhem!  Paraphrasing what goatini has said, here: I will continue to stand outside CPCs’ adoption mills and demonstrate against the mass trafficking they continue to do daily.  Since 97% of PP’s services are NOT abortion services(and most of CPCs services involve trafficking for adoption purposes), but preVENTative care, the above comment shows what you REALLY think of women and minorities.  Nothing at all.  You are the biggest bigot around.

Most of these are in low income minority neighborhoods because they target blacks and latinos.

Most of these are in low income minority neighbourhoods because people who are black, latino or of any other minority tend to CHOOSE to have the most abortions (as well as ctt the most pregnancies ).

Their founder began targeting blacks and they continue to do so today. Those who champion abortion will deny Sangers history because it shows the organization in a bad light…but nothing can change the truth of history past.

And where is this truth that you speak of?  Oh, right, standing with the ProChoicers because you can’t provide one SHRED of evidence to refute that truth.

You say they want the best for women……yet they work against showing the woman an ultrasound of the baby the woman wants to kill. They have been exposed for selling fetal body parts and for not reporting underaged girls who get abortions in their clinics.

We work against women being FORCED to view an ultrasound, like the chattel ProLifers want her to be.  And you continue to ignore solid evidence, when given, that proves that viewing ultrasounds does NOThing to change a woman’s mind.  In fact, in MANY cases, it provides a woman with a sense of relief.  Selling fetal body parts?  I’ll refer you to ahunt’s own comment below this italicized quote.  Reporting underaged girls?  Wow, proving just how big of a bigot you REALLY are, eh?  After all, if you weren’t, you wouldn’t want them to be put in a situation where they were abused even more, now, would you?

If a woman is more traumatized by protesters then she deserves what she gets. Because she is the one who killed her baby…….not those that stand outside and pray that she would change her decision. Where is PP for the millions of women who regret their abortions. I will tell you where they are……..COLLECTING MONEY FOR THE NEXT ONE.

No baby, no killing, involved.  Wow, such compassion.  Shows how ProLife you really AREn’t, especially since, re: what I said above, most of these women are probably going in for services that would preVENT abortion.  DERRRR….  Millions of women also regret continuing their pregnancies, where are CPCs for them?  Collecting money for their next victim, because they, too, work against preventative services.  However, where we empathize with women who regret their abortions, CPCs continue to spread shame and stigma against abortion, unwed, teenaged pregnancies AND relinquishment, the very thing they supposedly proMOTE.  Such hypocrisy is unexpected by now, though, as is your continued denial of it.

  • arekushieru

Something is wrong with my comment, certain parts of it are bolded when they shouldn’t be.  Grrrr….

  • goatini

And you are an aider and abetter to the crime of human trafficking that is perpetrated by the ADOPTION MILLS.  You are a contributor to the adoption mills’ supply chain of HUMANS FOR SALE.

Get your head out of the bible and into Business Accounting 101.  And then look up the P&L statements for (1) the Vatican; (2) the Vatican Bank; (3) the US Roman Catholic Church, and finally, (4) the billion dollar adoption mill businesses, free-lance grifters, and the shyster lawyers who facilitate the sale of human beings.

  • goatini

    Want my testimony?

  • datasnake

    This:

They have been exposed for selling fetal body parts

was the funniest comment I’ve seen in ages. It’s the sort of thing I would expect from Stephen Colbert. Of course, he would be kidding. Think about it: you can’t sell something unless you have a buyer. Who the hell would want to buy “fetal body parts”? They aren’t decorative, they have no medical use, no resale value and they don’t even taste very good unless they’re soaked in BBQ sauce.

  • ahunt

Not to worry, A. It happens, from time to time.

It was my understanding that PP often locates their facilities in areas of greatest need…for low income women lacking ANY other preventative care options.

Why do pro-lifers want to take the last, best option for preventative medicine away from low-income women? Oh, that’s right…doing so justifies their contempt for poor women who dare to have sex. Sluts get what they deserve, and pro-lifers could not be happier about it.

(turnabout being fair play an’ all.)

Unadulterated anti-choice hate for you, let all those who call themselves “pro-life” let that one roll in their tongues for a while. Taste the hate, taste the judgment, taste the insanity. The women who aren’t traumatized by their abortions don’t count because they are murderers, the good ones are traumatized. What causes regret now? Could it be this damned choice that the haters give their women?

  • prochoiceferret

First of all PP does not do adoptions…they do abortions. They give out information and refer. Here is their pathetic stats on adoption.

Isn’t it funny? When you have an unwanted pregnancy, going through with it isn’t exactly the most attractive option. (And if it were, you probably wouldn’t be visiting a Planned Parenthood.)

You people hate the truth and deny it. You are so wrapped up in womans rights that you deny the living human being in the womb, its father and the family it might have had. YOU EMBRACE ABORTION…like it is some sacred sacrifice to your false gods. You are moral-less people.

The patriarchal temper tantrum would be funny, if it didn’t completely disregard the misery of millions of real, born people.

  • squirrely-girl

You are so wrapped up in womans rights that you deny the living human being in the womb, its father and the family it might have had.

Wow, so we should be worried about everybody’s rights except hers… got it! At least you’re honest I guess. :/

  • ldan

I will continue to stand outside PP’s abortion mills and demonstrate against the mass killings they continue to do daily. Most of these are in low income minority neighborhoods because they target blacks and latinos.

You do realize that not all PP clinics do abortions? You do realize that they set up in low-income neighborhoods because that’s where their services are needed…all their services? They don’t get that Title X money so they can offer low-cost STD screening, pap smears, contraception, etc. to the affluent, after all. (not that they’d turn someone away who has the funds for more expensive care, but that’s not their target audience.) They are not going out and encourage minority women to get abortions out of some twisted idea of genocide. In fact, only in your twisted logic do abortion clinics go out of their way to encourage abortion as opposed to simply being there to provide a needed and wanted service.

Their founder began targeting blacks and they continue to do so today. Those who champion abortion will deny Sangers history because it shows the organization in a bad light…but nothing can change the truth of history past.

I am not getting into another multi-page episode of quotes out of context. If the previous attempts of knowledgable posters here to enlighten you on your history revisionism didn’t make a dent, there’s little reason to bother now. Suffice it to say that the benefits of birth control are many, are obvious, and have nothing to do with Sanger (someone I suspect the vast majority of birth control user have never heard of).

Abortion makes PP billions of dollars……they make money on dead babies

3% of PP’s services are abortion-related…3%. They would have to be charging around $3,000 per abortion to gross $1 billion dollars off of those services, and far more to actually make that number in profit. So, politely…bullshit. You just want to keep screaming “dead babies!!” as if that will erase all logical argument.

You say they want the best for women……yet they work against showing the woman an ultrasound of the baby the woman wants to kill.

How is showing an ultrasound remotely related to what is best for the woman. And why are you using scare quotes around ‘the woman’. Are you somehow opining that women getting abortions aren’t women? I’d like you to show how making abortion illegal is remotely better for women overall than having it remain legal. I’m not holding my breath here, because you can’t. All you can do is keep screaming about babies, never mind that 80% of abortions are at a point in pregnancy when only those on the extremes consider the fetus to be something that could be called a baby.

They have been exposed for selling fetal body parts and for not reporting underaged girls who get abortions in their clinics.

And those issues were addressed through legal channels, increased training, changes in laws, etc. Your point?

If a woman is more traumatized by protesters then she deserves what she gets. Because she is the one who killed her baby…….not those that stand outside and pray that she would change her decision.

Yeah, we get it. You all believe that women ‘deserve what they get.’ You’re not just a nonsensical, illogical troll. You’re a hateful, misogynist one to boot.

Where is PP for the millions of women who regret their abortions. I will tell you where they are……..COLLECTING MONEY FOR THE NEXT ONE.

And where are your protestors, who believe that those regretful women deserve what they get? Oh right, screaming into those women’s faces about how badly they should feel for murdering their baby–again with the screaming about non-existent babies. Considering that screaming and shaming, your concern-trolling is rather sickening. PP clinics are hit or miss as far as how much counseling they have the resources to offer. They do provide referrals. And the vast majority of women who have abortions are fine afterwards.

Your posts are nothing more than the written form of the hate and shame you throw at women outside of clinics. There is no actual debate. You are not actually interested in conversation. Banning you would be the equivalent of upholding the various clinic access laws and highly appropriate since your shrill shrieking adds nothing to the conversation.

While banning you is not something I have the power to do, I can refuse to rise to the shrieking, incoherent troll bait you fling with the accuracy and sophistication of a monkey flinging poo. No more feeding this troll from me.

A lot of people don’t realize this, but the term “shyster” is actually anti-Semitic. Language is very important in social justice, so even the lesser known slurs should be eliminated from our vernacular!

Those who would force women and girls to bring a pregnancy to term, against their wishes, have no morals – and no shame!

I’ll continue to avoid using it, because it can be perceived as such. I’ve known a couple of people who definitely take offense, and I don’t think it’s my job to tell them that they’re wrong to do so.

But I really like linguistics, so I appreciate the clarification!

First of all PP does not do adoptions…they do abortions. They give out information and refer. Here is their pathetic stats on adoption.

So?  That wasn’t my contention.  After all, I speCIFically referred to CPCs when I made mention of adoption mills.

“$300,000,000 + Planned Parenthood = 134:1 – Need me to interpret? Planned Parenthood gets $300+ million of your tax dollars every year for “family planning services.”

And spending on war easily reaches around 30 times or more of that.  That’s a lot of subsidizing to justify killing innocent non-combatants, inCLUding young children and fetuses.  Yet, you rarely hear of anti-choicers all up in arms about it.

They use that to subsidize their moneymaker: abortion services.

Abortion ISn’t their moneymaker.  Preventative care IS.  Considering that preventative care reDUCes the number of unplanned pregnancies, that abortion care is far less expensive than pregnancy and childbirth care, that not every PP OFFERS abortion services AND the fact that abortion is only three percent of the services of those that DO offer them, that’s a lot of money directed towards something that probably doesn’t even come up as a blip on the radar.

Well, stats tell us that for every 134 abortions that Planned Parenthood committed, they referred only 1 adoption.  For those keeping at score, that 324,008 abortions and 2,405 adoptions.

Really?  Then they must be doing a wonderful job providing essential health care to women and not forcing them into a decision, such as adoption, that could affect them for the rest of their lives.

You people hate the truth and deny it. You are so wrapped up in womans rights that you deny the living human being in the womb, its father and the family it might have had. YOU EMBRACE ABORTION…like it is some sacred sacrifice to your false gods. You are moral-less people.

Maybe other people do, but I love and DON’T deny the *truth* that I am so wrapped up in women’s rights, that I am not willing to treat her as livestock for the *human life* developing in her uterus OR for the paternal parent and family that are NOT the main occupant of her body. I don’t know what kind of people you’ve met, before, but they certainly aren’t Pro-Choicers.  ProChoicers EMBRACE CHOICE, after all.  They EMBRACE THE WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE to terminate OR continue her pregnancy.  YOU EMBRACE SLAVERY AND RAPE…like it is some sacred sacrifice (although that is a term I use loosely, since sacrifice really only occurs when someone is willing to give up something precious in order to receive something else) to ‘Satan’.  You are moral-less people.
