Listen Up! Maternal Health, Purity Myths and Female Sexual Power on WBAI (and WBAI.org)

This Friday, August 21st from 1:00-2:00 pm EST, listen in as Jennifer Block, Jessica Valenti and Jaclyn Friedman talk to Women's Media Center's Tristan Aaron about taking care of pregnant and laboring mamas in this country, the big fail of abstinence-only programs and creating a culture of female sexual empowerment.

What are you doing this Friday from 1:00 – 2:00 pm EST?

You’re probably going to want to listen in at 99.5 FM in New York or stream live at WBAI.org the incredible radio program "Healthstyles" (or if you really must miss it, you can visit WBAI.org afterwards for an archive of the program and download it as a podcast).

Tristan Aaron of the Women’s Media Center will be guest-hosting the show this week and will be joined by some fantastic women for a not-to-miss discussion on maternal health issues in health care reform, whether abstinence only programs have contributed to rising rates of teen pregnancy and the pending rape case in the NFL.

Just who are these illustrious women? Aaron will talk with Jennifer Block author of "Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care" to discuss how health care reform can address our critical maternal health and maternity care challenges in this country as framed in her most recent article on Rewire (Part I of a two-part series), "Where’s The Birth Plan?" They will also be joined by Jessica Valenti, author of "The Purity Myth: How America’s Obsession with Virginity Is Hurting Young Women" and Jaclyn Friedman, co-editor of the anthology, "Yes Means Yes! Visions of Female Sexual Power & A World Without Rape."

"Healthstyles" is a 25 year-old institution, according to Tristan Aaron (and I’m sure many others!) and is regularly hosted by public health nurse Barbara Glickstein.

I’ve already bookmarked the site, people. I suggest you tune in, log on, load up, whatever…
