Roundup: Mousavi’s Wife, a Feminist and Activist

Mousavi's Wife, a Feminist and Activist; Operation Rescue Hosts Memorial at Tiller's Clinic; Mike Huckabee Discusses Abortion on Daily Show

Mousavi’s Wife, a Feminist and Activist
When asked if she
thought of herself as Iran’s Michelle Obama, Zahra Rahnavard, Iranian
opposition leader Mir Houssein Mousavi’s wife, said no. "I am a
follower of Zahra (the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad)," she
said in English, adding that she respects ‘all women who are active,’"
according to a DoubleX.com article.

Not only has the Mousavi’s wife held her husband’s hand in public and
worn heavy makeup and denim underneath her chador, she is the head of
al-Zahra Women’s University, has spent years fighting for stricter laws
against domestic abuse, and has advocated for better education and job
opportunities for women, according to the article.

Her
feminism and activism stemmed from her college years at Tehran
University, where she studied painting and art history. She founded
several Islamic women’s groups and even edited a women’s magazine,
where she used her power "to propagate Islamist values in Iran and abroad, working in particular against Iran’s feminists," the article said. Only in later years did Rahnavard’s women’s-based activism center on women’s rights and empowerment.

Operation Rescue Hosts Memorial at Tiller’s Clinic
Saturday
evening a small group of abortion opponents started a memorial at Dr.
George Tiller’s closed Wichita clinic. The memorial, of course, was not
for Tiller. Instead, Operation Rescue remembered the 60,000 abortions
Tiller performed at his clinic, according to a Huffington Post article.

Cheryl
Sullenger, senior policy adviser for Operation Rescue, called the
memorial peaceful and said, "It was exactly what we wanted."
After
about 30 anti-choice advocates showed up to the event, it was moved to
Operation Rescue’s national headquarters, a former abortion clinic
Operation Rescue purchased in 2006, and is also located in Wichita,
according to the article.

Mike Huckabee Discusses Abortion on Daily Show
Mike
Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas and former Republican
presidential nominee, appeared on the Daily Show to discuss abortion
with John Stewart, Jezebel reports.
The two made a pact the last time Huckabee was on the show, when he
said he would come back on if he was able to choose which topic they
would discuss. Last time, it was gay marriage.

Huckabee said his
position on abortion comes from his "respect for human life and his
belief that every human life has value," the article said.
Keep
in mind, Huckabee approved more executions than any other Arkansas
Governor. The show is divided into three segments, which are available
for viewing on the Jezebel Web site.
