The Credibility Deficit: Wright and Perkins Head to Fantasy Land

In our world, credibility is
currency, and Wendy Wright and Tony Perkins are flat broke.

Having worked for years and
years in the field of sexual heath and reproductive rights, I have gotten
used to the tactics used by Ms. Wright, president of Concerned Women
for America, and Mr. Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.
They have worked tirelessly to undermine the most basic rights of Americans
with a combination of misleading facts and outright deception.
But, I have to admit, even I was surprised to hear the latest coming
out of their mouths.

"Some people think that
declaring a state of emergency about the flu was a political thing to
push the Sebelius nomination through," Ms. Wright told the Washington
Independent
. Mr. Perkins echoed her view in an e-mail to supporters
saying, "[L]iberals are already scheming how they can use the health
scare to win the confirmation of pro-abortion extremist Gov. Kathleen
Sebelius (D-Kans.) as Secretary of Health and Human Services."

That’s right. Wendy
Wright and Tony Perkins believe that the Obama administration, perhaps
as the result of liberal scheming, concocted this whole swine-flu pandemic
in an effort to win the nomination of Secretary for Health and Human
Services candidate Kathleen Sebelius. This outrageous claim, which
is on the level with those who think the moon landing was faked, should
be immediately shuffled into the trash bin, and no one should give it
a moment’s further thought. It does, however, raise serious
questions about whether Ms. Wright and Mr. Perkins have futures as any
kind of serious advocates.

One of two things is going
on here. The first possibility is that these two leaders of prominent,
extreme, right-wing organizations have become completely divorced from
reality. This should be as troubling to their opponents, who may
find ourselves no longer dealing with rational people with whom we may
have reasonable debates, as to their supporters, who may find themselves
without a reliable captain at the helm.

But let’s give them the benefit
of the doubt and say that they still have their wits about them.
The second (and perhaps more insidious) option, is that Ms. Wright and
Mr. Perkins will simply say or do anything that they think will help
them get attention. When faced with the fact that a qualified,
popular governor was about to be confirmed as HHS Secretary, they didn’t
express their disappointment in the pick and pledge or promote their
policies as best they can while facing, perhaps, a hostile administration,
a situation we, as sexual health and reproductive rights advocates,
are all too familiar with. Instead, they tried to sell a conspiracy
theory so that their supporters have someone or something to blame.

Either way, the result is the
same. People who will believe anything, say anything, or do anything
to achieve their goals have no credibility and no role to play in serious
discussions about the future of our country. If Mr. Perkins and
Ms. Wright want to join the ranks of Anne Coulter and Rush Limbaugh
to heckle and rabble rouse from the crowd, that’s their prerogative.
However, policy makers, advocates, educators, parents, and teachers
should all realize that, as soon as Ms. Wright and Mr. Perkins entered
this fantasy land, they have forfeited their credibility and any claim
they once had to being part of the debate.

The fact that they used the potential scare of the pandemic to not only usher in the baby killing supporter, but they also used the distraction to pass the hate crimes bill thru with little to no coverage. The swine flu is just one of the many things God knew was comming and that this administration would use to help carry out its agenda.Keeping in mind that all positions of authority over man are appointed by God.God knows how this administration will be used to fulfill the scriptures of the end times and set things in motion for the return of Christ. All things work together for the Glory of God.These two are by no means saying that this administration caused the swine flu, just that they capitalised on it to move on their agenda.

I guess they also think the governments of the other countries with swine flu cases and the public health organisations of those countries, as well as the World Health Organisation, are also involved in the Evil Plot to get Sebelius confirmed? I love the way the wingnuts really believe American internal politics are the centre of the world.

Actually, I think that’s the creepiest and most annoying element of American fundamentalist Christianity — the way it’s infused with scary, militant nationalism and American exceptionalism.

Baby killing supporter? Abortion is the ending of a clump of cells (over 90% are in the first three months) a baby is from BIRTH on. Your wacky rhetoric is ridiculous. How do YOU know what God knows, if there is even a God at all? Silly right wing religious nut that you are. President Obama has the RIGHT to have the people who he wants confirmed, and may I add, he actually DOES have a mandate, as over half of the country who cast their vote cast it for HIM. Keep your fantasy God out of the laws that affect me, other women, and OUR bodies. Our Constitution gives women the right to a safe and legal abortion. Their lives and their rights are over any fetus that they happen to gestate in their BODIES. That is the law of the land, and many other civilized, developed nations. If you don’t like it, try living in those backwater developing countries where abortion is illegal, and children who are born and named don’t even make it to their third birthdays due to poverty, starvation, disease, and neglect, and then tell me what is better.

The mysogonist, right wing crazies for “GOD” really just want to keep women down and in their place, tied to their fertility and consequences of their actions for actually having the nerve for wanting and having a sex life, even if unmarried. they care nothing for fetuses, but use them for their wacky agenda. They hate women and their autonomy, unless of course women are married and birthing too many babies to actually enjoy a sex life even within marriage. Men and teen boys, however, who have sex out outside of marriage are beyond reproach or consequences in right wing nut fantasy land. As long as women go back to the fictional 40’s where they catered to men and birthed lots of babies while the man could have mistresses and have every whim at home cared for, they would be happy. Using “God” and fetuses for this is just part of their wacky fantasy agenda.

Baby killing is baby killing, nothing fantasy about it. Thanks to our government woman get away with murder thats the only difference. Here they can commit murder as a matter of convenience.

The WOMAN’s body, and there is no baby, unless she wants one, then it is born, named, and given a birth certificate and becomes a part of the human race. only THEN does it have a LIFE.

I am not surprised about the fervor with which these two keep spouting, but God did’t do it! Why do people put human emotions on something we call God?!This is about health and human rights,WOMEN,having control over their bodies and not wanting another child!Ignorance,is the policy of these two! Thats being kind!!Killing a baby is murder, only after a birth certificate has been issued!Thank You Jan!

  • invalid-0

other wise the baby killing women would not need to kill to prevent it .

Everyone, hang on to your birth certificate: If JAN ever becomes a political leader you could get shot if you loose it!

JAN has a problem with birth certificates?

The description of the piece suggests that Wright and Perkins implied or said that the Swine Flu doesn’t exist and was made up by the Obama administration, or was spread by that administration on purpose. What the two basically said was that Obama’s administration was over-sensationalizing the flue scare, so they were expressing their opinion on reality, not “living in a fantasy land.”

Progo35, the fantasy was that an effective response by the government on the H1N1 pandemic had the ulterior motive of pushing Sebelius’s confirmation through. No one is positing that the Obama administration created the virus, nor helped to propagate it—but the notion that it orchestrated its response for that political end borders on paranoid delusion. Obama can’t so much as sneeze at a press conference without Perkins and Wright thinking it’s part of some grand pro-abortion conspiracy.

    Need I say more??

Phyllis! A birth cerificate marks the beginning of a new life, as recognized by our society. A death certificate marks the death of a person who was recognized as having lived by our society. Pogo and her ridiculous attempt to ignore or twist that fact, made me laugh. I am sure she does not realize how ridiculous she sounds, nor do other anti-choicers when they spew the nonsense that they spew. After all, they don’t deal in facts, they deal in emotions and religious nonsense, as well as outdated, but very much alive misogyny. After all, you have to have a real hatred of women to ignore their plight when they become pregnant but cannot afford financially, physically, or emotionally, to bring a child into this world. Forced birth is NOT an option, and interferes with not only a woman’s autonomy, but a woman’s Constitutional right to freedom and the pursuit of happiness, that is HER RIGHT by HER BIRTH. Making abortion illegal, only makes women go underground and subject to butchers and causes THEIR deaths, as we have seen in the past. You have to really HATE women, to want that for them!

  • progo35

Apparently, since she doesn’t believe that a baby is a baby until after it has a birth certificate.

I am also very concerned about reducing the number of abortions. We know from research that the best way to do this is to educated women, men, boys and girls about birth control.

I don’t understand why everything has become so politicized. It’s really sad when you think about it because we shouldn’t have to analyze the motives of politicians. It would be nice if they were in our best interest. My friend had the swine flu so I know it is a very real thing, but it really wasn’t a big deal. Everyone’s getting it, I don’t understand why we’re all freaking out.
