Making a conclusion that abstinence-only programs are to blame for a 3% increase in births is a classic example of taking a small piece of data and using your bias to make it what you want it to be. If abstinence-only is to blame for increased births, then who is to blame for the rate of teens ever having sex decreasing from about 54% to 46% in the same time period? Why is that comprehensive sex advocates like yourself blame abstinence-only for one bad piece of data, but at the same time say that decreasing teenage sex rates have nothing to do with increased abstience-only in federally-funded programs? You simply cannot have it both ways!

A logical conclusion is that there are many reasons why teenage sex has decreased over the last 15 years, including an increased emphasis on all types of sexual education, abstinence-only included. There are several rigorous evaluations that have shown abstinence-only programs to be effective. There are also evaluations that show certain ab-ed programs not to be effective. The same can be said for comprehensive sex programs. Not every program employed is effective, and the actual curiculums may not be the reason.

Researchers must be careful to draw conclusions, because there is always the possibility for spuriousness. Regarding the increase in birth rates among 15-19 year olds, only advocates like yourself are drawing conclusions. The researchers are saying, “hey, we need to wait and see if this is a trend or not before making any conclusions.” Then if it is a trend, scientific studies need to address exactly why the increase.

Let’s not make hasty conclusions based on our personal biases.
