White Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Guy for No Goddamn Reason at All

In which a white cop fires wildly at an unarmed Black man, and the Black man apologizes because he knows he had no right to be Black in public.

"My name is Sean Groubert and I'm incompetent and racist." - This Guy, probably Richland County Detention Center

Today in news that will make you want to crawl under your bed and pray for a meteorite to hit the planet and destroy life on earth as we know it, a white cop unloaded his gun on a Black guy because the Black guy had the nerve to—wait for it—attempt to comply with the cop’s demand.

Sean Groubert of the “I’m Deathly Afraid of Black People So I’m Going to Shoot Them on Sight” Grouberts shot Levar Jones four times when Jones’ only offense was attempting to comply with Groubert’s demand to see Jones’ driver’s license.

You truly have to watch the video to grasp the inherent WTF-iness of the situation.

Officer Groubert follows Jones’ car into the parking lot of a gas station. Jones appears to be minding his own business—maybe wearing a seatbelt, maybe not—When Officer Groubert decided to stop him. He claims it was for a seatbelt violation.

As Jones gets out of his car, Groubert asks Jones for his license. Jones immediately pulls out a gun and yells “Suck it, pig!” cranked up some old school N.W.A. jams, and starts to unload on the cop.

No wait—he didn’t do anything of the kind. Jones actually just turns around to grab his license out of his car at which point shit gets real: Office Groubert loses his ever-loving mind, screams “GET OUT OF THE CAR!” and starts shooting wildly.

And here’s the best part—and by “best,” I mean “worst”—Shooter McGee unloads his weapon in a goddamn gas station.

That’s right. Trigger Happy McGillicutty thought it would be a good idea to wildly fire shots in a gas station—you know gas stations—with the gas and the propane and the other highly flammable substances?

You really have to see it to believe it:

Did I mention that they’re in a gas station? Because they are.

I half expected Groubert to yell something about orange mocha frappuccinoooooooos, grab a gas pump, and start spraying gas around willy-nilly before lighting a cigarette à la Zoolander. I mean, that’s the level of intelligence we’re dealing with here, people.

Fortunately, Sean Groubert is as incompetent a shot as he is a police officer. Of the four shots that he fired—at point blank range, mind you—only one hit Jones (in the hip; he survived), and none hit any of the gas tanks.

The most depressing part of the video is not that this white cop is obviously deathly afraid of Black men—so afraid that as soon as Jones moves, Groubert snaps and starts shooting like a goddamn idiot—but that after Jones is shot, Jones acts like he did something wrong.

After Jones is lying on the ground, presumably bleeding from a gunshot wound—Jones asks “Why did you shoot me?” Groubert responds by screaming at Jones to put his hands behind his back even though the prudent thing to do would have been to immediately call for a paramedic since he’d just shot the dude for no goddamn reason.

When Jones asks, “What did I do, sir?”—notice how Jones calls him “sir” rather than freaking right the hell out because even though he’s lying on the ground after having been shot, he knows that he is still in danger of the cop deciding to finish him off—Groubert responds, “Buddy, you dove headfirst back into your car.” And then Jones apologizes.

Let me repeat that.

Jones—who had just been unjustifiably gunned down for doing nothing more than complying with the cop’s demand to see his license—apologizes to the cop for doing what the cop asked him to do.

Is this what life is always going to be like for Black people in this country? Are we going to have to start apologizing for our very existence whenever we go out in public? Should we start wearing t-shirts with a slogan that says “Sorry, I Didn’t Mean to Be Black” just so law enforcement knows that we regret having been born with bodies that scare the shit out of them, but there’s nothing we can do about it so please don’t kill us?

It is infuriating.

The good news is that Groubert has been fired from his job—and not put on administrative leave as is so often the case—and was arrested and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. If convicted he could face 20 years in prison.

Why Groubert wasn’t charged with attempted murder is beyond me. I reckon he was charged with something the prosecutor thought might stick. But considering the fact that cops almost never are held accountable when they kill Black men unjustifiably—partly because what is considered “unjustifiable” is so subjective anyway—I have little faith that this guy will be convicted. The people on the jury will likely be people who also are deathly afraid of Black men or people who know cops that are deathly afraid of Black men.

After all, we’re all Darren Wilson now, aren’t we?

The bad news is that we can now add “attempting to comply with a trigger-happy cop’s demands” to The List of Shit Black People Aren’t Allowed to Do If They Want to Live. That list includes… well… everything.

And considering that Eric Holder—who has been righteous when it comes to the civil rights of Black Americans—just announced that he is resigning, any hopes that I had of seeing a solution to the increasing levels of police violence directed at Black people in this country are quickly dwindling.

Frankly, if it weren’t for the dash cam in the car, I reckon Officer Groubert would’ve just killed Levar Jones. Because let’s get real: Had Jones died, and had there been no video evidence of what happened, Groubert could have made up any story he wanted to—”He had a gun!” or “He bum-rushed me!” or “He was high on the marijuana!” or any of the other lies that cops tell when it comes to trying to cover up the unjustifiable murder of Black people—and he probably wouldn’t have been arrested or charged. In fact, he’d probably still have his job.

Needless to say, I don’t like this planet anymore, and I would like to move please.
